Baking or eyebrow business?

Hi all

I am currently a SAHM. I ran a baking business for a while but closed it down, due to no particular reason really other than I wanted to explore other options...I am also qualified in doing eyebrows/lashes etc and I'm just wondering which business you think would be a better 'side earner' for a SAHM?

(I do already have insurance for both and would do either option from home)

I'm just wondering which you think would be more popular? Things like iced biscuits/cakes or eyebrow/lash lifts/lash extensions

Thanks

I agree with lashes and brows for all the reasons outlined above. Also you can offer a wider range of related services in time, if you want. I know someone who is doing really well doing just that.

Thanks so much! Yes definitely more options in the beauty industry

yes and you are meeting with people and talking to them too. Backing would be by yourself, and I think there is a reason you stopped doing it.

That was actually what I enjoyed about baking 🙉 not having to speak to anyone lol

Ok then that changes it!!
I think with the lashes you would deffo need to be doing a bit of chatting.

I still think the lashes is a better business than baking though.

I could work on my social skills I guess 😅

I never think people are prepared to pay for the true cost of a home made cake - all the hours you put in.

Id go for lashes

Unless you live somewhere with an elderly population I'd go for lashes and brows too. That's for a number of reasons:

  1. you would be more likely to build up a group of regular customers, especially given that many women these days seem to consider money spent on brows, lashes (and nails) a normal expense, rather than a luxury. I suspect that's much less true of older women (NB I'm in my 60s and it would never have occurred to me that people would pay for brows and lashes to be done as often as every 3 weeks

  2. you wouldn't be so vulnerable to rising costs of raw materials and electricity

  3. supermarket prices for cakes are pretty cheap and many people would be reluctant to pay the sort of prices you would need to charge to cover your time, electricity and good quality ingredients.

Thankyou for your input! ☺️ I actually live in a development where no one else seems to do brows so it could work great!x

Lashes/brows
It’s always been said that during a recession, lipstick sales go up because woman like a small, relatively inexpensive treat and lashes are not silly expensive (I pay £22 every 3 weeks) plus you only need a few clients as they return consistently to you. Plus, with all the will in the world - I cannot do my own lash extensions. However, I can bake a cake or a biscuit. Homemade cakes are a lot more money, and in the current climate I am more likely to buy one from Tesco if I don’t want to bake myself.

alternatively, advertise both and see which one just grows faster

I agree with this. I’m not your target audience as I’ve never had any type of extensions or acrylic nails dine, but there are several salons where I live and they seem busy. Same with hair dressers.
I think it’s a small luxury many women like to allow themselves even in difficult times.

I agree with pp. baking has always been difficult to make a decent living from and even more now with the rising cost of energy and ingredients. I know a few talented bakers who gave up as it wasn’t workable.

lashes etc are regular business and not easy to replicate yourself.
