What to say is the reason you are job hunting if you don’t like your boss

If I am asked in an interview why I am looking to leave current position and it’s basically because my boss is a fuckwit and deeply toxic can I say that? Or is that not the done thing.

"Looking for a new challenge"

Mogginsthemog · 26/04/2023 21:24

Want to gain experience in bla bla bla
Just tailor it to the job you're going for.

Not the done thing, even if it's true. Find another more generic reason.

Maybe you want to do X and you thought you would have opportunities to do that in your current job, but things have changed because of Y.

PS I sympathise. In the same boat.

ScottBakula · 26/04/2023 21:31

No you def cant say that , not only is it unprofessional but your new employer is likely to contact your current one for a reference.
What makes your boss a fuckwit ? Use that as a starting point
Micro manages = looking for a more independent role.

Too heavy work load = looking for a better work life balance.

Boring = looking for a more challenging role

Constantly changing their mind = looking for stability

And so on

She micromanages at times. So let’s me run with something will then jump in and make everything more complicated.

she also had little favourites (and I’m not one of them) - they will get lots of
opportunities etc

so looking for a more independent role and looking to really be the right hand person in the team
does that sound ok?

Yeah I wouldn't say that...

Pick something different in new job vs old job and say you've always wanted to work in x sector or with y product

Make it about a pull factor ie something in thr new job that's attracted you, not a push factor ie something in the old job that's making you want to move.

Those kind of micromanagers are the worst.

Give you the illusion of autonomy then once you've cracked on they jump in and change it.

I always say something about it being a pull factor - “what really appealed to me about this was blah blah blah” and just don’t mention your current company.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 26/04/2023 22:12

Looking for more experience in….

The thing I like most in my current role is X and this job offers me a chance to spend more of my time doing X/will let me experience a wider variety of X.

Basically anything that says it’s not a matter of wanting to leave, more of a matter of wanting this new opportunity.

hagueliue · 26/04/2023 22:13

You just say why your skills are good for the role, ie I love my current job but would like to develop myself in X (part of new job description) and think this role would be a great fit. I have skills in Y and Z

FlemCandango · 26/04/2023 22:19

Hah I have been there toxic work environment a manager out of his depth. I did not say that, in my interview. The new role was a demotion in position (but higher pay and working remotely which suited me). In a few months I got a role similar level but more pay/ responsibility than previously. I am now 18 m later very glad I moved jobs. I am glad I didn't shit bag my old place in interview - I had no need to be that open, it is more strategic to focus on what is appealing about the new role/ organisation and much more what they are interested in.
