Remote work - travel expenses for mandatory day in office

Title says it all really.

My remote job requires me to come in to the office (in a different city - 4.5 hour round journey) once a month. I'm expected to pay my own travel expenses for this mandatory trip. Any other client meetings or required travel is paid for by the company.

My contract also had the work office stated as my usual place of work, which it obviously isn't.

Would value any opinions/experiences from other remote workers. Is this the norm?

When I started my job, I negotiated having a remote contract for exactly this reason. Originally, I was going to be classed as based at our head office which is miles away, a visit would have cost around £300 for travel and accommodation on top.

My contract states I’m an office worker - though more hybrid. Work have provided us with an office - desk & chairs etc My choice is to WFH. If I go into another office other than the one in my contract then yes I can claim mileage/train fare.

Husband contract is home based he can claim for travel into work and lunch!

Risk for contract to be updated to remote worker maybe they will say no we provide an office space & could loose flexibility.
