Flexible jobs based on work load

My husband is self employed. Very specific industry which he has been in for 20 years. He works approx 5-8 days a month and gets paid a very high day rate.

He usually gets about a weeks notice about the jobs - the days, times and places are not negotiable. When the work is available he goes. He has no guarantee of any work and rising costs are making times a bit tight.

He'd like a second job that gives him a 'workload' either weekly or monthly that can be done 'as and when' he can fit it in.

The only thing I can think of is something like Uber driving. But there must be over jobs - possibly computer based? Data input or something?

Anyone know anything I could look in to? Thanks

Wouldn't it be better/possible for him to increase his networking/marketing/communication to increase his work in his current field?

Whats his skill set? Surely better to capitalise on that than drive an Uber?

Sadly that isn't possible. He can't do anything linked to what he does.

He needs something that can just fit around it. I've tried googling but it seems to come up with part time and 'chose your hours' but set days/hours each week which is the bit that isn't possible.

I know people who pick up delivery routes with Amazon on an ad hoc basis but you're talking minimum wage after expenses.

If his usual hourly charge is £60+ it would seem a bit ridiculous to do this. Surely there must be some way to use his skills more effectively?

Any job with a zero hours contract.

Has he considered working through an agency. That way he has more freedom with picking and choosing the work he does

I think the only likely possibilities are going to be self employed, where he has ultimate control over whether or when to pick up/put down work.

Anything paye is going to have deadlines, expectations, minimum hours, holiday allowance, shifts booked in advance and all the rest.

I know several people in decent salaried jobs with similar erratic hours that have a side line as a taxi driver. A couple of nights a week here and there can easily come to an extra £1k or so a month.
