If you have a meaningful job - what do you do?

Meaningful = something that helps someone in the community or changes the local area / environment or lives for the better somehow.

I can't keep working in Sales Admin. It's frivolous, meaningless and pointless.

I want a career change and I want to make a difference to this shit sad little world. Happy to earn NMW.

I live in Cornwall. Charity jobs here are rare and I don't want to WFH.

Local Authority here is a toxic hell hole full of suffocating red tape. Including TA roles 🤢 I am degree educated.

I faint at the sight of vomit and blood.

Any ideas?

I am a drugs counsellor. It's very challenging but so rewarding being able to help people on their recovery journey

Parish Clerk - do lots of things like managing a few nature reserves, running community projects like allotments, community garden and community fridge. Parish councils have more autonomy than local councils in my experience!

This sounds brilliant! I absolutely love my (suburban) parish council. They do amazing community events like open air cinema screenings, local youth services, have taken over many of the important community buildings and just make our area feel like a proper community.

DH and I often comment on how low the precept is for the community council and yet they deliver so much in comparison to what we see (I know a lot is behind the scenes) from the unitary authority. Love our parish council and I'm really glad you love your job!

I always think that there is importance in every job.

I’m a nursing sister, on a very acute ward, but worked in the labs before retraining. I love it. There are days where I could just cry, and days where things are amazing.

No two days are the same, and you never know who you will meet. Some patients I’ve known for years as they do keep coming in (they have chronic illnesses), others I just look after for a short time. Getting to know them, and help them and their families is a privilege. it’s lovely to build the rapport and trust, and see that a difference has been made.

My team is like a family to me, they’re wonderful. I love what I do, where I work and who I work with. I hope I will work here for the rest of my working life.

Hopefully the government doesn’t completely piss up the NHS!!

Primary teaching.

I'm not sure I'd recommend it in the current climate, but I'm lucky to work in a fantastic school with a fantastic head and I love my job. It genuinely does feel like I'm doing something worthwhile with my life.

I have a price on my fictitious head. I'm sorry to say I have seen more people get away with the most abhorrent crimes than are currently sat in a cell.

I too want to thank you for the work you do.

Psychotherapist in the NHS - B7.
have done it for 15 years and while i enjoy parts of it I’m pretty burnt out.

I fantasise about working in a coffee shop or cocktail bar, anything where i don’t have to listen to peoples problems all day and be expected to improve someone’s mental health when their life is so objectively shit.

I’m a children’s social worker but the best job I ever did was before I qualified, I was a support worker in 24/7 supported housing for homeless young people (16-25, mostly around 18).

They were complex young people and there was often a whole lot of drama, but it was a privilege to effectively step into their lives, get to know them, and start to help them with the tools to manage their lives. I loved it.

I’m a young person support worker in a 24/7 placement. The give a bit of banter but on the whole is a decent kid. It’s also 2:1 and I’m lucky to work with my friend, so we’re like one dysfunctional family. Love it.
