Part time and day off falls on Coronation Bank Holiday

I’m a teacher in an independent school. Would my bursary laugh me out of the office if I asked for an extra day off, as my normal day off is a Monday: the day of the coronation?

No, nhs staff who don't work on that day have received a day annual leave back.

In normal cases you should get a pro rata amount of bank holiday added to your annual leave but don't know how that works if you're a teacher

PrinceHaz · 19/04/2023 11:12

Thanks both: that’s useful to know.

The coronation is on Saturday, the Monday is BH so your holiday pay should be adjusted. Not sure if you'll get an extra day off, in my school (state) it would be a big no.

As you are a part time worker, you should not get another day off, you should get a prorated amount of time off, so if you are 0.8FTE you should get an extra 0.8 day of annual leave.

When this happened for the funeral a lot of people didn't get paid as our contracts were for 8 bank holidays, a couple of friends worked it and some were paid as a gogw. It's worth asking

^This ^^

You, and other posters here, are assuming that you are entitled to an extra bank holiday. It actually comes down to what you contract says. Some are "20 days plus 8 bank holidays" (so you don't get extra bank holidays) or "28 days including bank holidays" (ditto - no extra time off if there are more bank holidays) or similar wording. There is no automatic entitlement to bank holidays or all bank holidays - it always comes down to the wording in your contract.

I work in FE - those members of staff on part time contracts who are not due to work on the Monday are getting an extra days pay.

Smartiepants79 · 19/04/2023 16:42

I don’t work Mondays so I never get ‘bank Holliday’ as such as I’m already not at work.
I’m not sure I’ve ever had extra holiday or pay for this?? Surely it’s just one of the things about choosing not to work Mondays?? It wouldn’t even occur to me to ask.
I’m also a part time teacher by the way!

You should be getting pro rata pay for bank holidays even if you don't work some of them.

I'm glad I read this as I had assumed I was automatically getting the Monday off. I've just read my contract (I'm in a different job since when the queen had her funeral) and it explicitly states what the 8 bank holidays are.

Ill be double checking tomorrow and then booking the day off if its not automatic!

Foreversearch · 20/04/2023 00:43

@PrinceHaz as your full time colleagues are being given an extra day as pp have said you get a pro rata amount e.g. 1 / 5 days x 4 days = 0.8 of a day. This can be taken at a time you and the school agree.
