Perfect job - but I can't get there!

Thesisquibble · 19/04/2023 08:34

I have been made redundant a few months ago and have struggled finding a new role. I live in an area where jobs are usually seasonal so anything officey is quite unusual.

The perfect job, perfect pay and perfect hours has been advertised.

BUT I can't get there. There's no public transport. And I cannot drive for a while due to blacking out. I repeat: I cannot drive due to blacking out (and currently in the midst of tests / diagnosis). I had tomsay that twice for all the posters who say "learn to drive"... I can drive already, thanks!

Should I bother with the interview and hope that I can lift share? I live in a City and the role is in a town - 25 mins away by car. As far as I can tell they don't offer WFH. (WFH is unusual here)

DH can potentially give me a lift but he works FT and it'll be difficult to squeeze it all in to his workday.

DVLA won't reassess my driving license for a while.

I just feel sad about being made redundant and sad thst I'm stuck. And sad that my perfect role seems unattainable.

Wwyd?

I'd go for the jnterview; it's good experience and you might find there's somebody there who could give you a lift if you give them petrol money.

IwanttoworkforThomasNightingale · 19/04/2023 08:47

OP, ignore all the people posting uninformed nonsense and contact Access to Work.

Odd that no transport if you live in a city
and the job is less that half hour away in a town

Odd in what way?
Are you one of those posters who doesn't understand the realities of public transport for those of us who live in places with limited options?

CrapBucket · 19/04/2023 08:48

Definitely talk to Access to Work. I would also hope your husband goes out of his way to help, and once you are working there you can see if anyone lives near you that would like petrol money for lifts some of the time. Good luck

Squiblet · 19/04/2023 08:49

If she's at risk of blacking out in a car, she should NOT be riding a bike!!

Sounds frustrating OP - so there's no chance of doing the job from home most days, and paying for a taxi on the other days?

OP does not need to pay for a taxi, Access to Work will fund this.

I really hope you apply. There might be a way. Hope Access to Work will help you - I've had good experiences with them a while back as a manager.

Wfh might be unusual but why not be a trailblazer?

Cleoforever · 19/04/2023 08:52

ClaraBourne · 19/04/2023 08:38

Go for the interview for the practice at least and see what happens.

There might be a lift sharing option, you never know. You'll always wonder if you don't. Good luck.

”there may be a lift sharing option”

Even if there was, from day 1? Very very unlikely

If you were the owner / senior manager, would you choose to trail blaze a new way of working for the company with a new starter?

Thesisquibble · 19/04/2023 08:54

Ah this sucks. I could cry. We did have a great bus service pre pandemic but they've all gone to shit. There's a disused train line between both places too. Frustrating.

The job is only 2 days a week! I just felt like I could go through all the hoo hah and fuss for 2 days a week but I guess you're right.

Job market here is awful. Thankfully I'm not too worried about money - it was just that comfort of having my career continue, meeting new people, learning, working (I love working!)

The op lives in a….. CITY!

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 19/04/2023 08:55

Hi OP. I am here with constructive advice. Apply for the job. Can you also apply for PIP and access to work finding? Access to work may pay for your travel?

Thesisquibble · 19/04/2023 08:56

My lift sharing idea was because its a large company - some colleagues MUST live in my City and commute in. I'd pay them ALL their fuel for those 2 days 😂

I did it for an ex colleague. I was hoping Karma would come along and pat me on the back.

2 days a week
not too worried about money
perfect job

I would suck up cost of a taxi

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 19/04/2023 08:56

Access to work funding. Look it up now. If you get offered the job you can apply for it.

shintyminty · 19/04/2023 08:56

Just because the op lives in a city doesn’t mean that there’s a workable option to and from a town even if it’s nearby.

this is particularly true in rural areas of the uk.

Thesisquibble · 19/04/2023 08:57

A very very small, backwards and mainly rural city. HTH @Cleoforever - you seem to be obsessed with my thread. Don't you have anything else to do with your day? 😊

OP posts:
3luckystars · 19/04/2023 08:57

Pay for a taxi and take it one step at a time.

shintyminty · 19/04/2023 08:57

Ie a city with a rural hinterland.

PermanentTemporary · 19/04/2023 08:58

@Cleoforever no I might not, however after 3 months or so I might easily consider it. I'm just suggesting keeping it as a possible request in the future.

That’s exactly what I was thinking of

sympathies. People who haven’t lived somewhere like that don’t understand.

Dracuuule · 19/04/2023 09:00

I'd still apply.
Could you get a lift from dh for part of the way or one of the journeys?
Can you use public transport for part of the way and a taxi for the rest of the journey?
Or public transport and a folding bike?
An electric bike?

There will be a way!

HamSandwichKiller · 19/04/2023 09:01

Assume you'll need a taxi for the first few weeks (maybe longer), once you're in the job you can hopefully find some colleagues who do drive in from your home location. Hopefully you can get access to work to pay for some of the cost.

Basically go for it and apply.

ditalini · 19/04/2023 09:05

The issue is that the prospective employer will absolutely not see it as their problem how you get to work, so even with a potential lift from an obliging colleage you'll need to have a rock solid back-up for the times when they can't take you (sickness, annual leave etc).

If an ad hoc taxi is possible then yes, go for it (and investigate Access to Work), but maybe guve them a call first to explain your transport issue and ask whether staff already lift share.

bananamonkey · 19/04/2023 09:05

Only 2 days a week you can definitely make it work with DH lifts + taxis until you get your licence back.

I’m not sure why you’re ignoring the Access to Work posts but this seems like the obvious solution to fund taxis temporarily.
