I hate my job - gp receptionist

I started working as a gp receptionist a few months ago and I hate it. Not because of the patients per se but because of my colleagues. There are a few of us who have started and all of a sudden I seem to be the only one out the new bunch actually doing any work, to the point i’m making a lot of mistakes and my senior colleagues are starting to pick up on it. I have explained that the others need to be trained in more things in order for me to not make so many mistakes (I won’t be so overwhelmed) but nobody seems to really listen. Am I right to want to leave? are dental practices like this?

Not to mention I work in one of the worst rated GPs in my area . 🙃silly me for not checking the reviews

I've started work as a GP receptionist too , have any of you had much training at all ? I'm literally learning as I go along

Hatemylife2023 · 19/04/2023 21:18

Hi OP was it easy to get into the GP Receptionist role can I ask, sorry you are having a tough time x

mybeautifuloak · 19/04/2023 21:19

Are the others getting called out for not doing anything? Maybe just do your work and not theirs?

Tarantullah · 19/04/2023 21:21

I've never worked as one but can imagine it being pretty hellish. I was shocked to see an advert for a GP receptionist job at the surgery I go to- minimum wage and no sick pay until you've been there for 2 years- hardly appealing for a full on, busy job working with accuracy and even worse with the public!

Anyway I'd just be maliciously compliant until you get the training. Just do the things you've been trained to do and get in writing somehow- email or whatever- that you have requested training on x, y or z. If you fuck up it'll still be considered your fault whether you've had the training or not.

Hi , yes it was extremely easy to get the role . The NHS are desperate unfortunately and will hire anyone. Hence why rude receptionist keep their jobs🥱

Unfortunately no , I do the most hours out of the new bunch . I have asked if they’ll be trained but apart from the “seniors” not doing so ,my fellow new colleagues seem to not want to be trained!.

Plus I’m the only one that works with the loud mouth colleague who seems to criticise everything I do. I have noticed bully culture is on the rise in the NHS🫣I literally dread(cry) a night before I go in and when I do get there I find myself crying in the toilets out of frustration.

Get another job and leave! It's not worth it. The job is as replaceable to you as you are to them.

I'm wondering if you are in Northampton. I went to the docs recently and only one receptionist was working and she was doing her absolute best to help me and when getting advice they made it clear she was doing too much! I really felt for her and she was amazing.

TakeMyStrongHand · 20/04/2023 16:41

Also could you raise with with your manager?

DustyLee123 · 20/04/2023 16:43

Are you employed by the NHS, or by the GP’s themselves, as lots of GP’s are private companies ?
Try having a word with the practice manager and check that all new staff have had the training that they should have had.

Dental practice receptionists are mostly dual qualified as dental nurses. Also as dental practices have to see patients as efficiently as possible to keep in business it is essential to have a good reception team.
That being said gp or dentist team work is essential but not always part of the ethos. Look at how quick staff turnover is. Most people working at practices I've worked have worked there decades . However plenty of places have a fast staff turnover or employ trainees with inevitable consequences.

Recently visited my GPS where one receptionist was working flat out on the phone and checking patients in while a bunch of others sat behind having a laugh and a chat about their night out. Didn't seem very fair or patient focused to have people queuing up while they stood around.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 20/04/2023 16:58

Also made me realise that if this what goes on it's no wonder I never get through on the phone 🤯

The amount of times this has happened to me is insane. I’m convinced most gp’s are the same. I absolutely dread going in everyday - hopefully I hear good news about the other jobs I’ve applied for.

Also this GP surgery is nothing like it was 10-15 years ago. It is a large practice which used to have a busy but super efficient reception team, doctors, nurse practitioners, midwives, community nurses and other specialists. When you go there now it is empty, yet the population has increased. It is sad to see.
