Gift for my boss

My boss has been super supportive helping me to navigate my next promotion milestone. My promotion is about to happen and I would really like to get him a gift as a thank you (i have already thanked him verbally lots and he knows I have really appreciated his help) but just want to show my gratitude. Problem is very well off and therefore I am struggling to think of a gift! I was thinking maybe a restaurant voucher for him and his wife….any ideas greatly received! Thanks

Is it appropriate?

It's his job to help you develop. Not sure that's gift worthy.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 15/04/2023 19:15

I wouldn't, it could be misconstrued

Quveas · 15/04/2023 19:16

Don't worry about the amount of money. Something tiny but meaningful will be just as good. For example, my manager is addicted to badges. He'd love a new badge for his lanyard more than dinner out!

topcat2014 · 15/04/2023 19:17

Maybe just a card? Small plant?

Any more than that could feel awkward.

Willywanderer · 15/04/2023 19:18

A well chosen thank you card with a really meaningful handwritten note would be good. Appropriate and thoughtful and I'd be super touched. Definitely don't spend money on anything big. Maybe a treat he likes to get at lunchtime - a cake or cookie or whatever so you can say 'Here boss I got you a treat when I was out and here's this card too.'

Errmmmmmmmmmmm · 15/04/2023 19:22

i was thinking a thank you card would be more appropriate, anything more than that might seem a bit OTT.

A thank you card and a bottle of wine.

Busybusybusy · 15/04/2023 19:45

Thanks for the suggestions…I am thinking card and either some fancy chocs or a fancy bottle of wine!

Yeah, no gift required and maybe inappropriate. A well worded card is all that's needed. Its his job as manager to guide and mentor you.
And anyway, as you say, he's very well off so could you afford a restaurant voucher for somewhere he'd actually usually eat?

daisychain01 · 16/04/2023 06:00

A well-chosen card in which you can include a message like "Thank you for all your support, it means a lot to me" and a bottle of good quality wine is as much as you need to do.

It's the thought that counts and I'm sure your boss will be very touched by that gesture.

determinedtomakethiswork · 16/04/2023 06:08

I think a gift is inappropriate. It's unnecessary to as it's not as if he needs anything. Just bringing a nice cake on the day you're leaving and a thank you card and that's fine.

youveturnedupwelldone · 16/04/2023 07:29

Please just write him a well thought out and sincere note/message rather than give a gift. I know you've said thanks verbally and don't feel it's enough, but there is something about writing it down that elevates the right words to the level of it being a gift.

I say this as a manager who is always supportive of my staff's development and promotions - it is my job to do this, I enjoy it and as such I've not done anything special for them, although I understand my support will feel personal to them especially if they've never had that kind of support before.

Mortimercat · 16/04/2023 11:38

No do not get a gift it is not appropriate, to be honest I think getting a card is cringeworthy as well.

Sweetener12 · 17/04/2023 09:41

Yeah, get a card, or maybe a video card, and that would be enough.
