Finally a saturday job has come up at a library by me.

It won't make me massivly better off financially, and I don't particularly want to work Saturdays, but it would be foot in the door, so I want to apply.

The form is pretty simple, but has anyone in the know got any tips on what to put in the section where you can waffle on ??

I used to work in the library and I remember on my application writing about any experiencing which are connected to the services the library has to offer (i.e. if your library has internet access, you can write about being proficient with using it). They are also quite keen on you demonstarting your understanding on equal opportunities, so you might want to include a statement to reflect this (i.e I am aware of the library's policy on eqaul opps etc). Also the usual about stating your team work/work on own iniative skills, interpersonal and communication skills.

Hi there - I worked in libraries for about five years as a library assistant. I also used to work in the public and voluntary sector and have recruited staff. I agree with everything Amani says and also wanted to add about the importance of addressing the person spec when applying for public sector jobs.

When filing in that box where you can waffle is to take a close look at the person spec they will have sent and then, address every single point on the person spec. Say what experience you have in that area.

When the panel goes through the applications to shortlist, they will be using a chart with all the person spec listed and they will 'grade' you application on how well you addressed each point.

I used to LOVE applications where the applicant simply took each point and then explained how they met that aspect of the person spec in the order that they appeared on the spec - it made my job of scoring that application much easier.

An example how you can structure this space is:

I have a wide range of experience and skills that are relevant to this job.

Excellent Communication Skills - I have excellent communication skills which I used in my previous job as a receptionist at ABC organisation where I had to deal with face-to-face enquires, answer the phone, and responde to email enquires.

Experience working with Internet - and put experience here!

Hope that helps!

"They are also quite keen on you demonstarting your understanding on equal opportunities, so you might want to include a statement to reflect this (i.e I am aware of the library's policy on eqaul opps etc)" Amani is this for real? How typically public sector!
