BPSS

Can anyone advise me on what this includes? It's for a defence company that I've been trying to get my foot in the door for so long. I had the experience, just not the qualifications. They've called me and are interested due to the time served and experience I have in the job. The pay is fantastic and the company seems great judging by glassdoor reviews.

On the job, it says "SC, start on BPSS' I've never had anything like this before so just wondering what this will involve.

Here you go:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/united-kingdom-security-vetting-clearance-levels

Click into the link and it will tell you what you need for BPSS and SC.

Thank you!!

I couldn't see this when I had a Google!

Good luck in the new job! Smile

Bear in mind you'll be waiting at least six months for the vetting process so don't had your notice in just yet!

I have heard to expect up to 3-6 months wait on this! It's long isn't it.

I'm guessing I've not 100% got it until the background check is completed? My notice at work is 3 months so I don't know how I'd work this out.

I interviewed recently for civil service and was told that BPSS is fairly quick (1-3 weeks) and SC currently takes 3-6 months but they've seen it take as long as 12 months before.

"SC, start on BPSS" sounds like they'll let you start after BPSS, while SC is still in progress (your continuing employment will still be conditional on passing SC). As others have said, don't hand your notice in until you have your post-BPSS offer!

calmby · 04/04/2023 16:24

It's just BPSS which is not technically a security clearance though will check for criminal convictions, it's separate from the other clearances, it's not done by the same organisation and it can be done quickly. The waits that take months are for security clearances.

calmby · 04/04/2023 16:24

(But yes the SC will take a bit of time, but they're presumably happy to take you on at risk until the full clearance is done)

It makes sense now you've said this. It's a 12 month contract I'd be on so I'd roughly be halfway through by the time it's complete.

It's been a weeknow so I'll see if I hear anything back in the next couple of weeks!

Just interested to see if you heard back quickly for the BPSS? I've been offered a role that requires BPSS and I can't resign from my current job without it - although I know it will be fine. Just a pain to not be able to resign!

I'd also caution my civil service department has recently changed so it won't allow people to start under BPSS. If you're joining a contracting company just make sure they check if they are sending you into civil service areas. A few companies have been caught out recently as they'd employed on the assumption BPSS would suffice until SC came through.
As with everything I'm sure not all areas are the same.
I've also known SC to take 12+ months, last one I saw through took about 10 weeks. It all depends on the individuals history, name, family etc.

dizzygirl1 · 02/07/2023 22:25

Apologies for grammar, it's late on a Sunday!

Daffidale · 02/07/2023 23:31

I’ve had BPSS through in less than a week. They send you an online code now too so you don’t need to wait for a letter.

SC (security clearance) takes longer and the forms are a pain as you need lots of stuff you don’t necessarily know like parents place of birth, dates parents and siblings moved into their houses etc

That's good to hear I hope mine comes through as quickly as that
