OMG I got the job!

I thought the interview went "OK" but it's a high paid, attractive job and I didn't think it went well enough iyswim. I'd managed to persuade myself I didn't really want it....

They've just called and told me I was their favourite from the first sift (telephone interview) and by far the best at interview and tasks. That I tick all the boxes and they're really happy. Which was nice to hear Smile

So, the FTE is almost 50% higher than my current job. However, this is a 3day pw job, so I will be about £3k pa worse off. Plus I get meals supplied in my current job and the commute will be more expensive and longer but I'll be working 3 days. That 's probably another £200 pm. Which I can afford comfortably, but volunteering for a pay cut is a bit weird.

They even acknowledged that I'll be taking a paycut and offered me the top of the scale.

The people were lovely, both those above and below me. If I have a concern it is that it doesn't sound as interesting as my current role (although parts of that frustrate me) and if I'm honest I'm worried about exactly why the salary is so high. It's a London job, which my current one isn't, but even so.

I don't "need" the PT hours but I do have things I'd like to spend more time on.

So I've accepted. Eek, am I right?

Well done you!!!

I think I recall you posting about whether or not to apply a little while ago???

So glad you got it, three days a week is great (I miss doing just 3)!

Hope you’re going out to celebrate!

Aprilx · 03/04/2023 15:01

I don’t know if you are right, I couldn’t understand your post! What do you mean your FTE is 50% higher, I assume that means you currently work two days and are increasing to three? I didn’t understand about the £3k or the £200pm either? I don’t really know why you are taking a pay cut for a job that sounds less interesting either, but honestly, I could not make head note tail of that. I think your excitement showed! 😅

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/04/2023 15:04

Congratulations! Nothing wrong with having a bit more spare time if you can afford it,

GMOOH2023 · 03/04/2023 15:14

@Aprilx Yours too!

It's perfectly clear.

If OP were working full time (as she does now) her new salary would be 50% higher than she currently earns, but as she is going to be working 3 days instead of 5 she will effectively be taking a pay cut.

Sounds great OP.

More free time for a similar salary seems pretty good to me!

And if it doesn't work out, it's not forever, you can always get another job.

I've read it back and it still makes sense to me Grin It's a small pay cut because I'll be going from 5 days to 3 and additional fares etc will be about £200 pm.

Well done! I took a pay cut for a job with better prospects. Haven't regretted it a bit. I just tighten my budget slightly.

Just be careful that you won't get stuck at the top of the pay scale as you've gone in at the top.

Lcb123 · 03/04/2023 15:41

congratulations! Assuming you can afford the pay cut I’d definitely go for it, I’d love to work 3 days and once you’re in the door I’m sure they’ll be lots of opportunities

Well I will be stuck at the top of the scale, but I've reached it 5 years early.

This is a senior role and a bit of a wind down (hours) to retirement for me. I'm not really bothered about prospects. I don't expect to be there more than 5 years, although PT I might end up staying longer than had I been FT.

Before this came up I was considering asking to go to 4 days in current job. I'd have been worse off then than I am now on 3 days.

She said FTE not salary! FTE is headcount nothing to do with £ hence it didn’t make sense to me.

Mamette · 05/04/2023 07:42

Sounds brilliant. You’re buying 40% of your working week for the bargain price of 3k per annum.

ChristmasJumpers · 05/04/2023 07:44

@Aprilx I read FTE as full time equivalent, as in the full time salary of the new job is 50% higher than the salary of the current job. I think this is a standard use of FTE - I've come across it many times

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 05/04/2023 07:53

I'd bloody love to go three days a week for a minor wage cut.
Congratulations OP - from what you've said this sounds a really good move to me 😁.

bluebottle23 · 05/04/2023 07:55

Congratulations on the new job. I had similar recently and understand the predicament you're in. Initially the job was offering more money, but I requested part time hours and so now I'm actually £80 a month worse off and every penny counts right now. HOWEVER, I weighed up the pros and cons. This is a new company and new opportunities, everyone who has worked or dealt with my new employer says how much they love it, which is a big bonus... it also leads to better opportunities too. My current job is very stressful and I work a shorter week but my hours are condensed. I weighed up all the pros and cons and would always be left with 'what ifs' if I stayed in current job. (And still be carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders which has severely impacted my life over the past five years)! Loads of luck and let us know when you start xxx

Roselilly36 · 05/04/2023 07:56

Many congrats OP, great news, very pleased for you.

YukoandHiro · 05/04/2023 07:57

Definitely accept - you may make yourself so indispensable that you'll be able to go up to 4 days or even FT pretty quickly

ClaudiaCustard · 05/04/2023 07:58

@YukoandHiro did you read the op?

In that case it sounds perfect! I've worked less than full time for 20 years or so. No longer need to as my kids have grown up, but just can't give up my day off!

Oblomov23 · 05/04/2023 08:59

Well done!

GMOOH2023 · 05/04/2023 09:22

FTE is headcount nothing to do with £

Most other people on this thread have (correctly) interpreted it as Full Time Earnings/Employment/Equivalent.

It is fairly clear if you take the entire post in context.

Lindy2 · 05/04/2023 09:41

If you can afford it, then I'd go for it.

If you really wanted you could potentially get another 1 or 2 day part time job doing something you enjoy to plug some of the salary loss. Something that would be a hobby job. I'd pick something like working at a National Trust property or garden centre, for the social side but without the corporate pressure.

Well done you.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 05/04/2023 09:42

It sounds perfect for a wind down role then. In 6 months you'll wonder how you managed without your 2 extra free days!
