Any payroll professionals about?

Backstory - left public sector administrator job - finance related. Toyed between HR and Accounts/Payroll roles as my next move. Went for HR and was a big mistake, I hate it and the tasks involved: I'm in my 2nd role in less than 2 years - the first was a revolving door and the current is somewhat structureless. Also having dealt with customers /clients for years, hr is a bit of a different league.

Transpires I like monotonous work and have realised don't want to progress in HR as its too open ended and messy. I'm finishing my cipd at present.

I have seen my previous job has had 1 permanent opening and now 1 temporary opening since I left. I'd love to reapply and go back but at the same time feel I need to just keep it as a memory as I'm aware things change. If I had my time again, I'd never of left.

So, I have seen a payroll job advertised with training. Am I mad to be making a leap again although I think this is where I should of went. Anyone in payroll any words of wisdom?

It depends on the job you end up in.
Large Companies who dont outsource may habe a large number of employees but a a low volume of changes but need the dedicated staff capacity. Most jobs will have a mix of high turnover of staff plus a lot of pay element.

IMO you need to be very detail orientated and work fast and accurate under pressure.
In the end, its paying somebodys food and housing bill on time, so you cant make mistakes. If you mess up everybody will know

Plus be quick to notice a blip.
Blips are stuff where the instructions received and sign off look to be per the book but the individals pay outputs dont match the whole pattern.
This is anything eg everybody bar 1 department get paid a pay rise (why) to being introduced to a new employee who has no pay file (HR forgot to put John on the payrol) etc etc
