Paying out of own pocket to travel far for interview?

Hello, hope you can help me 😊
I have a teams interview on Friday for a job I’m really excite about (it’s a couple of rungs up the ladder
for me and I’m sure I won’t get it but I’m going to try
my hardest).
the role is mainly home based with some travel.

i just had an email confirming my virtual interview on Friday and saying if it goes well I may be shortlisted and called
to a second interview on Wednesday 29th March in London.

I am a single mum on quite a low income and to pay for travel and childcare for next Wednesday at short notice is a lot for me having looked at flights (I’m north of Scotland) As I won’t know until Monday 27th if I’ve made short list for 2nd interview.

Is it reasonable for me to ask to be reimbursed for my travel or is this something I just need to suck up and if I don’t get the job just accept
i spent a lot
on flights but had
good
experience?

I travel occasionally for my current role and have for others too but the travel has always been covered by the company so I’m not out of pocket.

I really don’t want to set off on bad foot with them obviously as the job would be amazing!

Just wanted
to hop on and say thanks for all your help 💞
interview didn’t go well so not been invited back for follow up ☹️I had prepared but some of the questions I had no idea what they were asking me with terms I hadn’t heard of and it was just cringe worthingly embarrassing By the 4th time I had to say I didn’t know what they were asking me ☹️
nice to offload here as can’t in real life as no real friends in real life, so thank you.

Oh no!!! Well, one to chalk up to experience- and to give yourself a massive pat on the back for clearly writing a killer application!
and now at least you know what area to build up if you wanted to go for something similar in future…

wobblymum1 · 24/03/2023 12:23

Awwww that’s so kind, thank you!

Oh no, what a shame. I would go back to them for interview feedback and stress how interested you were in the role. You never know where it might lead in the future.

Thank you so so much I will do that

Ah, that's such a shame, just read your full thread and was hoping for a positive update.

Always look at interviews as an opportunity to practice and fine tune your interview skills, all interviews, whether good or bad will help you interview better the next time x

Ah OP I've been there, I had an interview in Jan and I just couldn't answer the questions how they wanted me too, my cheeks still go red now thinking about it! It just wasn't the right fit, I got the next one that was better suited to me and I'm sure you will too!!!

wobblymum1 · 24/03/2023 12:47

You are all so kind, thank you. Yes my cheeks are literally still burning, just mortifying!

If you can remember the questions write them down. When I have another interview I look at questions I've been asked previously and prepare answers, just incase I get asked them again.

Been there, OP. Try to wipe it from your mind completely. On to the next one!

The fact that you decided to 'just go for it' shows that you have enormous potential. Keep that spark alive and you'll have your day very soon and be successful. Don't be deterred, learn all you can in your current job, look for opportunities for training or be part of a team where you are taking on a new project. 😊

If you claim benefits, contact your local office as they could find this

Plusnett · 24/03/2023 20:45

*as they could fund this in future!

Sorry I’m not sure what you mean, find what?
I’m not on benefits, I work full time and am a single mum, I was just trying to go for a position that paid more and had more responsibility!
