Hi mums,

I have a DC (1) who's currently in nursery; I work 9 to 5, 3 days a week. My pay is decent and I get other perks such as commission.

The thing is, I've really come to dislike my industry and the job itself - love the people; we're a very small company and my directors and colleagues are some of my best friends.

An opportunity has arisen to go into my dream job, it would mean taking a paycut (which I can deal with); the issue is - it'd be going onto shift work, 4 days of various shifts, 4 days off. I may also have to work on occasions like Christmas Day etc.

It has been a long time since I've done shifts & I have grown accustomed to having my weekends and 2 days in the week with my little one; but it is my dream job; it's a lifelong career and something I've had an interest in for over a decade.

I just dont know what to do - do I stay miserable at work, but financially better off & have the structure of knowing what days I have off; or do I take the plunge?

Majorly stuck between a rock and a hard place!

If your current colleagues are genuinely your best friends then those relationships can continue regardless of where you work.

Versus

do I stay miserable at work

Which do you want to be in 10 years?

Is the paycut permanent or just while you start the new path?

How does this new job and work pattern affect your plans for childcare? Are you going to have to put your child in full time nursery for example?

Having read the two options I would say stay where you are and enjoy the two days off with your child per week and keep looking. In the short term at least you are working with good friends, don't take it too seriously.

In this economic environment I wouldn't be keen on taking a pay cut either.
