What's wrong with me

Please be gentle, I'm feeling a bit delicate.

I think this is the second job where I have been told that I'm not great at it. On paper I am, but when I get to doing the job, I'm not. I have a lot on my plate with 2 small children and an unwell father, and the kind of job I'm in (healthcare) isn't suited to all that is going on perhaps.

I can't just quit. I've been offered some help to get better at my job, but I'm just feeling bad at the moment. Not sure what the point of this post is really. How to be better at work when I'm frazzled at home I guess.

Hey, don't worry about work tonight, I feel like shit too (different reason) just know you're good enough. You're dealing with loads, give your self a break. I too work in healthcare and it's bloody hard. Your a mum and a daughter aswell. Go easy on yourself x

Never a nice feeling to get negative feedback, totally understandable to be feeling upset. Did your work give you feedback on where you need to improve? It's not going to be comfortable, but if you listen to the feedback you can improve and put this behind you.

What is it that you're supposedly not great at?

Thank you very much.

My manager was kind. He gave some feedback from another colleague and patients. The colleague said my communication wasn't very good. It's fine in emails and keeping records and things, but that because I have to dash out the door to pick up the kids, they don't get a full picture of what's happened with patients. It's written in records. I guess I need to stay an extra 5 minutes to update in person, which I can do.

Some other things too, but I suppose that was a major one.

It sounds like you are fairly new in the job. In which case, don't fret about it. Nobody can get everything right at first, and you have to learn. It sounds like your manager is giving you some balanced feedback - you are good at this, but this not so good. That's a fair approach, but you are focussing on the negative and not the positives. You aren't bad at your job - you are good at written communications and keeping records. But you need to look at how you can improve your verbal communication with colleagues, especially at the end of the day. Discuss this with your manager. The will understand if you are dashing away to collect children, but what can you both do to help ensure that you improve in this area. It isn't all down to you to solve this - espcially if you have finished your hours and need to go. Don't take it to heart, but see it as a positive - improvement is just as important as what you are already good at, because that is the route to progression.
