What do you think was behind this?

Had an interview for a job advertised at xx salary.

Got a phone call to offer it to me but they couldn’t pay the salary advertised as it had been an admin error.

The person then said the salary and it was lower than current salary but she was sure she could go back to her manager, if I was still interested and try and get it raised a little but no where near the advertised salary.

I said I was still interested because (for me, it was closer to home, less childcare etc) and it was left that she would talk to her manager.

She said she would call me the next day.
Didn’t call.

What do you think was behind that? They offered it to someone else and I was back up? They were trying to get me for cheaper?

There’s no way I’d have accepted that absolute shite about the salary and an admin error.

Cherryana · 17/03/2023 15:26

Well I didn’t.. after I got off the phone and thought about it for a millisecond it was ‘well if they are that disorganised at best or dishonest at worst’ what else will they be like. So I had already decided to decline.

Even my 9 year old ‘got it’ when I said about the salary and was like ‘what?!!!’

But I would have said it over the phone ..if she had phoned like she said she would. Instead I emailed to withdrawn yesterday night.

I would say they looked at their applicants and thought ‘shit, we could have got someone cheaper’ then proceeded to see who would fall for it.

You dodged a bullet there, I reckon.

Thanks @Pringleface I think you are right

To be fair, they might still be trying to negotiate you a higher salary, but if it's a drastic difference I'd just avoid it like the plague.

Did they not ask a salary expectation at the interview?

How is a company claiming that a salary published advert is ‘an admin error’ when it’s actually much lower then trying to coerce applicants into accepting it by pretending to ‘negotiate with senior managers to increase it’ in any way a fair or legitimate way to conduct recruitment?

vagueandconfused · 17/03/2023 22:28

They only realised the salary in the advert was wrong after they interviewed?

What an absolute crock of shite.

The great thing is, you have dodged a bullet!

GoodChat · 17/03/2023 22:31

@Pringleface I never suggested it was?

Cherryana · 18/03/2023 08:26

Thanks everyone- yes there was a lot of 🚩 when I spoke to them.

I just wondered if this was a ‘thing’people did now if someone was second choice.

Call me to tell me I have got it, but say it’s lower, so if their first choice doesn’t take it - they would have got me for a cheaper rate.

It’s so annoying because I will never know what conversations went on behind the scenes…only that I dodged and that is a relief!
