So a member of staff from my team has disclosed she’s on 1p less than I am, I am her base manager. I am a qualified member of staff she is note she has no qualifications. Do I have a leg to stand on? We we both the same gender. I’ve yet to take it to head office as I’m unsure if I have any legal or any rights at all even though I know it’s morally wrong! Any advice appreciated

Morally unfair but not illegal.

My salary is uncomfortably close to my line manager's salary because I've worked here forever (well since 1996 so feels like it). I'm on an old pay scale that's had reasonably regular pay rises in line with inflation. Even the years when I haven't, I'm still well above the entry level for my grade and new employees cannot reach my salary without gaining the grade above me. I also don't have any formal qualifications beyond my A levels, all on the job learning (over 20 odd years so not to be dismissed).

Morally there's nothing wrong with my renumeration - or my manager's for that matter. They accepted the job on the T&Cs offered, including pay.

If you're in a similar position I really don't think that escalating as an issue will get you anywhere. You're much better off negotiating for a higher salary based on the tangible benefit you bring to the company.

I'd focus on finding out what the market rate is for your job and negotiating on that basis , rather than what a colleague says she's paid.

Not illegal - negotiate a pay rise or look elsewhere. I am a long time in a position and hold excellent conditions those coming in simply wont have access to - my conditions were achieved after multiple fights to keep them.

Thanks everyone! It’s just frustrating when you’re working really hard and the person in question does the bare minimum. It’s a bitter pill to swallow. I’ll definitely negotiate. Thank you
