Entering civil service as a SEO?

Thisismynamenow · 09/03/2023 09:38

Is this possible?
This is my current salary in an offshoot of thr civil service and realistically G7 is my natural progression if I were to want a promotion.

However can you get in at G7 or SEO, or am I needing to drop down to EO or lower to enter?

Yes, it's no problem to go in at any level. I entered as SEO, but dropped to HEO for my next role voluntarily. Hated the first job, love this one.

I know a few people who have come in at SEO and G7 levels from outside. It's all about how well you hit the behaviours and how well you write your CV and cover letter.
It might be worth finding a couple of jobs that you don't like the look of and submitting applications simply so you can get feedback and see how you score. That will give you an idea of what you need to work on for the job(s) you really want.

You have experience so yes you can apply for whatever role you are qualified for. You do not have to start at entry level

IVe been offered SEO analyst role due to start this shortly and was wondering if anyone has any experience of this role in the civil service?

RedCarsGoFaster · 01/10/2023 15:06

I'm an SEO analyst, but it'll depend on which organisation you're in. I have no line management responsibility for example.

RedCarsGoFaster · 01/10/2023 15:09

Aargh, no I'm not, I'm a HEO 😂😂

Sausageandchips123 · 01/10/2023 18:00

Thanks! I’m trying to figure out what a normal day looks like the JD seems a bit elusive tbh is it high tech analysis software used in the cs? Power bi etc? Any insight would be great

ahtred · 01/10/2023 19:52

Of course, you can come in at any grade depending on your experience. I joined as an SEO after 10 years prior work experience, and progressed through G7 to G6 within 3 years.

Poblano · 01/10/2023 22:39

I'm an SStO in the CS, so analysis function. I joined the CS at SEO/SStO level.

A typical day really depends on what your role is and in which department. If you're working on published stats then you're working to a set timetable and the work is very well defined. If you're working on other types of analysis, eg in a policy division, then things can be a lot more varied.

As for technologies that depends on your role. I use Excel, Power BI, Python and R in my role.

If you're a badged statistician there is a pretty high CPD requirement. I think it's the same for Social Research too.

The OP will be wasting their time submitting applications they don't like the look of. If they aren't selected for interview because it's a poor skills match, CS is not obliged to give feedback, they certainly don't get scores (scores are allocated only if they attend interview)

That's only true of MoJ in my experience, jobs applied through CSJ usually get scores, even then applications are scored (of course they have to be!) and if they're not published you can request them from HR, I have done this.

Though as a recruiter I am not condoning throwing in applications for free marking, additional work for someone seems a tad unfair.
