NHS Redundancy

We have been warned that my trust will be making job cuts as they need to make massive cost savings by the next financial year. Its still early stages so we don't know the finer details yet other than all jobs are being looked at and cuts will follow once this process has been done. Does anyone have any experience of the nhs redundancy process? I've been with the trust for 2 and a bit years so I'm guessing I would only qualify for the standard 2 months payment? I would like to stay with the NHS if I am made redundant - would a new role honour continuous employment even if there was a break following redundancy or would I lose that? Thank you!

I'd be surprised if you weren't redeployed tbh

Riddlediddle · 08/03/2023 12:45

No they said it won't be redeployment as they need to save the actual running costs so they have to cut jobs. I'm non-clinical so although we are important the clinical roles will be prioritised.
I'm just trying to get a better understanding of the redundancy process so I can be well prepared - knowledge is power and all of that!

There is an NHS redundancy procedure but it's absolutely rock bottom in it's generosity, basic legal minimum.

Can't recall the exact figures but it's something like if more than 20 jobs identified as redundant, then there has to be a consultation period with unions, sorry can't recall the timespan, and then after that individuals will be notified and given their statutory notice, eg 4 weeks, 3 months depending on job grade. If they are not looking to re-deploy than the current vacancies will count towards the redundancies which will at least mean less people effected. However if they take this as an "opportunity" to re-structure, and they probably will, everyone's job could be deemed as redundant and they'll expect people to apply for the new roles. So join the union, re-do your CV and see what else is out there. Get ahead of the curve for other jobs in the area.

Did you work in the public sector before the NHS? If you did, you may have more years of continuous service.

No I was new to the NHS just over 2 years unfortunately. They have pulled all advertised roles and a recruitment freeze is now in place. They're talking about flexible working but people doubt they will offer voluntary redundancies as the people who would want it would cost far too much! My cv is up to date and I'm keeping my eyes peeled for other roles but I'm not just going to jump at the first thing yet.
