What job can I do in the civil service?

I am very early 50's ( but think I'm much younger but hey ho!). Have spent much of my career working in media sales and digital marketing. Have recently been made redundant. I'm doing a bit of freelance work but keen to get another actual job. Working for an advertising/marketing agency doesn't feel quite right - the last two I worked at I was the oldest in the company! It's a very young industry. I love working with all ages but don't want to always be the oldest!
Anyway, thinking about Civil Service but what kind of role could I do with my skills? I'm sure I've got a lot of transferable skills but not sure if CS will recognise that?
Skills/experience: consultative sales, account management, customer service, basic analytics, digital marketing, ecommerce industry knowledge. I've also got a post Grad in HR Management although I've never used it but I'm interested in HR/recruitment/people type stuff as well as digital marketing.
Anyone with civil service knowledge know of any types of roles that I might have a chance at with this career experience??

You will find a job no problem as you have a lot of transferrable skills.

Navigating the application process is the difficult bit, once you are in you will find a wide range of jobs you could do.

The CS doesn’t discriminate on the basis of age, so you can go for graduate schemes, apprenticeships etc. as well as vacancies.

Loads OP. If I were you I would have a think about what grade you want to go in as (to work that out you might want to think about how much you want to earn, or on the flip side look up the grades online and see which you think you could most easily apply for) then I would look at all the available roles in that grade to see what peaks your interest. Sometimes it can be difficult looking for jobs if you're not seeking 1 specific profession because of the way they're grouped, so I prefer to look across the whole grade (this is the most thorough but admittedly not the quickest method!)

Look at digital roles, specifically user researcher, business analyst, content designer.

Thanks for replies. That's encouraging. Need to get to grips with the application process now!

Does anyone know how the civil service scoring works?

Oops - didn't mean to post so soon. I just got feedback from an application that I was unsuccessful ( no interview). Feedback said CV no assessed so '0' and personal statement score was '24'. That score was broken down into the different evidences/experience they were looking for - I got mainly 4s, one 5 and one 3 ( which I'm kicking myself about as I actually have loads of experience for that competency). Anyway not enough to get an interview. Do you think each competency was out of 7? or 10? It was the first one I have applied for an since then I think I'm a bit more knowledgable about what they are looking for re the application process so hopefully I'll do better next time...

To the best of my knowledge it's always out of 7. I recently did a personal statement which was 15 out of 21, as in three 7s. The frustrating thing was it wasn't broken down so I don't know if it was three 5s, or a 7, a 4 and a 3 (or whatever).

I've also read no one ever gets a 7 so really it's out of 6 🤷

@Daffodils23 the knack is usually using “I” not “we”, be specific so no “always” and cramming the evidence into the word count. You have a good basis so add in the extra evidence and then ruthlessly review and reword to reduce word count.

Brazilianadventure · 28/03/2023 19:06

@Daffodils23 also use the STAR ( Situation, Task, Action and Results). Bullets can be helpful to reduce word count.

Scienceadvisory · 30/03/2023 12:29

It's usually put of 7 with a pass mark of 4. So scoring a 3 would see an application rejected.

MabelMoo23 · 30/03/2023 13:32

As above, always out of 7, a 3 will get you rejected

also remember to say HOW you did something, not just what you did, but how you did it
