Social value roles

I'm looking to move into the private sector having worked in community development in housing and seem to be a good fit for social value roles. I also feel like some of them give more of an opportunity to make a difference.

Where would these be advertised? I've just seen a few on linked in and my previous jobsites I use won't be relevant.

What do you mean by social value roles?

Ilkleymoor · 28/02/2023 22:03

What used to be corporate social responsibility but in some roles is now more practical so running funding programmes, building a career pathway for more diverse or local young people or returners etc. Working with suppliers and procurement or people you are supplying. Possibly construction companies would be a good fit.

Could also be community investment.

Housing Associations that are also house builders? Curo is South West, but there will be others around the country.

Often have community focussed roles, and outreach programmes and fund/ sponsor IT equipment for individuals and groups.

Oh! I'm completely unaware of that. I've spent a lifetime in private sector and corporates too. Guess it must be pretty niche so no suggestions from me sorry.

Public sector or corporate real estate. ESG is massive.

I would find people on LinkedIn and ask if they will have a quick coffee with you and tell you more about the role and where they work. You may even find a job that way but you'll come away with a network and knowledge at the least.

I would investigate for social value roles:
Large developers eg British Land, Lendlease.
Estates eg The Crown, Grosvenor, Welcome
Consultants, there are some which specialise in this area eg Social Value Portal, The Good Economy.
Agents eg CBRE, Savills, Knight Frank, JLL
Investors with a social impact mandate.

It's still more niche than sustainability but is growing. You can also consider community engagement and there are in house roles for this with developers and also consultancies. Glasshouse is one which comes to mind.

There are a number of conferences (in fact there is one this week, the Festival of Place - it's online and they may give you a ticket if you contact them). Look at the companies and individuals speaking and contact them afterwards. There are also a number of podcast episodes out there on social value in real estate. You'll get an idea from all these.

Search for ESG or DE&I roles, what I see often though is that the social values elements are incorporated into other wider roles so a HR manager will will have responsibility for DE&I, procurement will have Sustainability, Recruitment will be required to build in apprenticeship routes and identify ways to increase diversity in hiring. It seems to rarely be a standalone role focused on Social Values

I am in this role and it’s very niche.
Look for Social Value advisor roles in the construction companies.
