Entitled manager wants me to give up evenings for tutoring help

I was very fortunate to have my boss fund my HR course and this week I found that I have passed which complicates my dilemma. My boss has decided to fund the exact same course for my manager and before I had even finished mine, she was already making remarks about me helping her in the evenings. How can I navigate the topic when she brings it up again? She has mentioned before that her friend is also doing the same course so perhaps I could use that to get out of it. I don’t wish to spend my evenings tutoring someone for free.

Just say no, your evenings are full. You could help in work tjme if they make the time available for you

PortiasBiscuit · 28/02/2023 16:58

Just say firmly that you need your evenings for family and hobbies but you are happy to help during your working day if you can.

QuertyGirl · 28/02/2023 16:58

Are they going to pay you? If not, say no.

Never work for free

Timeforabiscuit · 28/02/2023 17:01

Did you benefit from tutoring from the company, and this is a kind of pay it forward?

I'd be very suspicious of what help they'd need!

AdoraBell · 28/02/2023 17:01

Suggest she finds some time during work hours, not lunchtime, because your evenings aren’t available.

Your response-
Haha nice try. I've just spent weeks studying in the evenings and I now really need a break from that, Got loads of family commitments I've had to put off which I'm looking forward to having time for again. Happy to give you some time a lunchtime a couple of times a week. But honestly it's not that difficult to do yourself and you'll be fine. I was.

Then smile sweetly and wish them luck. If they approach you again send them a diary invite for Tuesday at 1pm

"thanks for the offer but I really don't want to do any overtime."

Act like you just assumed this would be paid. Be surprised if the manager suggests you do it for free.

QuertyGirl · 28/02/2023 17:16

Btw, you weren't fortunate that they funded the course, that's what employers are supposed to do

PennyForearm · 28/02/2023 17:21

Yeah I’d go with the whole “haha oh god I’ve just spent X months studying every evening, neglecting my DH and DC, I’ve got loads of family stuff to catch up on so won’t be doing any overtime any time soon…”.

What? You have just passed an HR course ... and don't know how to handle this HR problem?Grin

I’m very suspicious too considering she has time for various activities during the week and weeks . And yes I do get a raise
