Part time holiday

How would I work out holiday for someone who works 3 days (shorter hours) a week - Monday Tuesday Wednesday? Particularly thinking of the bank holidays.

HMRC provide a holiday calculator here 😊

Just the same as everyone else. They have x number of days prorated. The weeks off end up the same IYSWIM.

Work it out in hours. So however many hours worked divided by normal working week x full time allowance.

Bank holidays can be a red herring

Legally employees are entitled to a minimum number of days leave, which can include bank holidays
Some businesses will provide a number of days leave plus bank holidays and others will include them in the basic figure

You do not need to normally work on the actual bank holiday, so a part timer that doesn’t work Mondays is entitled to take their bank holiday when they choose, and a part timer who does work on Monday’s might find themselves needing to take off ‘a day and a bit’

Within the same business both full timers and part timers must be treated equally - but that means the part timer gets an equivalent proportion

So full timers get all bank holidays off. How does the part timers bank holiday get calculated? Do they get 3/5ths and then the rest they have to take out their other annual leave?

And the company give more than statutory

Yes 3/5 (or whatever % hours they work). Unfortunately many will fall on Mondays but you could give the option to work hours another day so not lose al.

This could come down to the fine print of how the employment contract is written

eg the statutory minimum number of days leave is 5.6 weeks
So 5.6 x 5 days is 28 days leave, and 5.6 x 3 days is 16.8 days - which is not a whole number but does reflect 3/5ths

Bank holidays would be 8 days a year, but then it’s arguable as to whether a part timer gets a full 8 days (16.8 + 8) 24.8 days or a 3/5th proportion (28+8 then 3/5ths) 21.6 days
