Hi all, looking for some stories and/or advice. I would really like to change career into accountancy with the view of working for myself eventually. How would I even start? Am I too old? I also have two very young children. I am in a fairly decent job that pays £48k pa but I now hate it. Please be nice!

Having two young children is a challenge, no doubt, but it's also an opportunity to show them the power of determination and chasing your dreams. Plus, it's wonderful to have a fairly decent job while you explore this transition – it provides some financial stability as you make the change.

Starting on this journey might seem a bit daunting, but fear not! Reach out to some accountants in Leicestershire for guidance and insights. They can help you understand the necessary steps and share their experiences with you. They've been through the ropes and can offer you invaluable advice on how to kickstart your career in accountancy.

It's not just about the exams, it's about the experience

You shouldn't be advising clients on tax, etc without any relevant experience - so this is key if you want to set up on your own

Salaries are lower in accountancy, if you work in practice, especially as a trainee and it is a long learning curve

The accountants that work for me, who are fully qualified with years of experience, barely earn what you are earning now

Working for yourself is hard, the annual costs are high, it will take time to build up a client base, and it can be a lonely place. But, I personally think it is worth it

Good luck
