Talking to my brother who is 35 about work. He is on over £100k and has been for a few years (he works in IT sector) He thinks its a normal wage for his age and is shocked i am on £60k at my age (37) I work in finance.
We both work in London. Am i really behind like my brother says?
I would love to be on £100k but wouldn't know which direction to turn to.
Anyone else on £100k under 40? what do you do for work?

Following this!

IwasToldThereWouldBeCake · 16/02/2023 10:38

Lots of funds lawyers on that money in mid 30s......and compliance, risk people.

SheilaFentiman · 16/02/2023 10:39

I am on this salary, just, at 39. Financial services.

But your brother is kidding himself that it is a “normal wage” for his or any age! My older brother is an accountant and his wage is close to yours, OP.

CaponeOnTax · 16/02/2023 10:40

He is being disingenuous or stupid. The UK median wage is £30-40k. A quick google will set you and him straight.

theremaybetulipsahead · 16/02/2023 10:40

Not me but someone close - 160k total package in early thirties. In IT.

Shamoo · 16/02/2023 10:42

Yes, over 100k from my early 30s. But of course I know that isn’t usual!!!

Whadda · 16/02/2023 10:42

Both my husband and I were on six figures by our late thirties.

Your brother is wrong in saying it’s not unusual. It’s certainly not the norm across any age group.

Hartlebury · 16/02/2023 10:43

His wage is clearly no indication of common sense.

RaininSummer · 16/02/2023 10:43

He is detached from reality.

This made me giggle, Thank you 😂

He can't be that bright if he thinks 60k is a low wage. So it is surprising that he earns so well.

Dotcheck · 16/02/2023 10:47

Gosh for people who are in IT and Finance, perhaps someone has to show you both how to google ‘average UK wage’ and apply critical thinking skills to the results.

Of course 60k isn’t below the norm. I’m not sure what answers you are looking for here?
There are specialist vacancy sites, have a look on them and see what roles attract high wages.

Nynynyny2018 · 16/02/2023 10:48

Well he might be a high earner but seems to have very little understanding of the real world if he isnt lying ! Of course it’s not common to be earning so much and he knows that …what an irritating brother you have .

BrutusMcDogface · 16/02/2023 10:50

How, just how? How can someone be earning that much at that age? I was never going to be filthy rich (teacher) but I work hard. See also nurses, firefighters, etc. Where is the justification here? Someone who saves lives is only paid a tiny fraction of someone who moves money around.

Does he work ridiculously long hours?

SheilaFentiman · 16/02/2023 10:51

Link

this says 100k is top 2% male, top 1% female.

This, in spades! I wanted to add “how is someone who seems so ignorant, earning so much money?!”

Meandfour · 16/02/2023 10:52

Over 100k. Property. 31.

Mushroo · 16/02/2023 10:56

Im based in the NW but my London equivalent would be on £100k or thereabouts.

Tax Advisor Big 4 (I’m 31). Associate Director

Rebellious23 · 16/02/2023 10:57

I'm 38 and on min wage plus commission so...
never earned over 28k

WeWereInParis · 16/02/2023 11:01

My BIL is at age 28. He's a software developer. He's well aware it's not a normal salary though and would never have an "oh gosh, how do you cope on a salary as low as £60k" sort of opinion.

Goldpanther · 16/02/2023 11:02

150k, 31, IT
DH on the other hand is 40, earns 26k.

I'd say it's a combination of luck, ambition, hard work and deciding whether you want to prioritise a career you enjoy or one that pays well (if your lucky it's both!)

Yes your right …soooo ignorant ,am actually quite embarrassed for him 🙄

MaverickGooseGoose · 16/02/2023 11:04

Does he mean it's normal for his age in his sector?

botleybump · 16/02/2023 11:04

I've been earning in this ballpark since late twenties, but realise it's not the norm - though does seem to be within my friendship circle.
My partner has been earning similar since early thirties.

He works in finance, I work in compliance within financial services.

HanSB · 16/02/2023 11:06

Does he work in IT the City in a finance company? I know friends who are on over 300k before 40. Actually in the City lots of salaries over 100k. If your peers are earning similar then that’s where his mindset has come from. Myself I started a business at 21 out of university where I earned 120k a year, did this a few years and changed industry to start another business earning around 260k max a year. Covid and higher costs has hit us hard so I’m taking around 50k home at the moment.
