Hello,

Im stumped with this one.

My 14 (almost 15) year old daughter wants to be a pilot. I thought this ‘phase’ would pass but it isn’t! She has already looked into flight school etc.

School have asked me to sort work experience for her for a week in May.

Help!!

Is there a small local areodrome near you ?

Fuctifin0 · 16/02/2023 08:14

Are there any aerospace engineering firms near you?
A bit tenuous but could be a fascinating I sight into the manufacture process. I still remember learning about how they put a channel down a turbine blade, real eye opening stuff.

You could try airport/flying school/RAF but a lot of kids at 14 do work experience in something that has nothing to do with future career. It’s still useful to experience applying, having an interview, dressing smartly, turning up on time, speaking to new adults and learning a bit about one work environment.
Longer term is she in air cadets? My DS has done a BTEC in aviation and has had several (free) flying lessons with them. He wants to be a doctor but did his work experience in a bank….

Air cadets, nearest airport, nearest air museum, online work experience (there's a lot of this sort of stuff these days), RAF recruiting office, friends who are in that field. My daughter found her own work experience online (Morgan Stanley... who knew they did online work experience), so your daughter could try Google.

Otherwise as others have said, do something that isn't related but that she might enjoy or that might come in handy. My daughter is also going to my workplace to spend a week learning about all the different departments.

My dd also wants to be a pilot and she did hers at a weather station.

sallylondon · 16/02/2023 08:44

My DD did work experience nothing related to her desired future role but if anything it's been more useful to her as it ended up in a solid five years of part time employment in a local shop which is a fantastic thing to have on her CV at 20years old and has taught her all sorts of useful skills.
So don't fret too hard about getting something related to being a pilot - she'd be better to get any w/exp and join air cadets for the piloting thing.

Do you have an airport or aerodrome near you? Many airports will take on work experience students, mine included. I've got a few students joining us in July who hope to be pilots and want to understand more about the airport process. Our based flight schools sometimes offer Work experience too.

RAF?
Isn't it impossible to be a pilot unless you either join the RAF or have hundreds of thousands to spend on private flying lessons?

TeaCakeandWarmHugs · 16/02/2023 12:33

I think she is living in the clouds (no pun intended) tbh. I might be wrong but we’ll see.
We live close to an airport so I could get in touch with them to see if they can offer anything.
Her older brother is going in the RAF (finger crossed 🤞) in the air systems side and is currently part way through the recruitment process. I think the RAF would probably be her best bet but I think she is more interested in the salary rather than the job itself. Only time will tell!

@TeaCakeandWarmHugs to be honest, ages the one who should be doing the looking and thinking and figuring out and not you. If you're not sure she's all that fussed about the reality of flying, then it would probably be a good idea to show she really is keen through looking. If she doesn't, then she possibly isn't.

The RAF, I'd recommend to people who want to fly, become an officer or get a trade they can use outside. It's not as great as it once was

*she's not ages

The forum software on here is beyond basic.

RAF as you said -has some work ex placements, expect competition to be strong
Aerospace companies - BAE etc
Airports (did have work ex, not sure if back up and running yet due to the pandemic) and flight schools
Flight museums
Anything telecomms related.
