Alleged worker shortage, but somehow I can't find a job

All you hear about in the media is that there is a worker shortage and that companies are crying out for staff, but where exactly are these desperate companies? I have 10 years experience in marketing and sales (but have moved into marketing exclusively in the past 8 years) and can't get an interview for the life of me. I have a BA and a masters and still, crickets.

I would like to move away from marketing and go more into data analysis (something I did frequently in my last role), but it feels very much like transferable skills don't count anymore. You need to have done the exact job role being advertised, and many companies want you to also have done that same role in the exact same industry or niche. In fact, I have applied for roles that are exactly like my current role, same exact duties, but they want 5 years experience in X and Y when realistically, someone with 3 years experience is just as good.

How is anyone meant to move on to a different role for more pay if employers seemingly only want lateral movers? I'm mystified. It wasn't like this a few years ago. Not to mention the pay is awful and every role has 200 applicants on LinkedIn desperate for the paltry wage. Sad state of affairs.

Join a union and ask them to help you bring a legal case.

unions are great. They are your protection against this kind of crap.

In my view we all need to join a union just as we all need to start a pension fund (ie as soon as you get your first job), they both might seem like a waste of money - until you get old and need them!

I work in IT (engineering), apparently people in their thirties are too old for entry level jobs in engineering (pays 30k+). This is the conversation my colleagues had recently, they were interviewing people to join. Ageism definitely exists in our field! Hide your age on your CV even if you have to delete some of the older positions!

When people reach out to me via LinkedIn I help them. I’ve also done the same and managed to message the person leaving. They spoke to me about the role and I had coffee with the hiring manager.

Hi, have you tried the Otta job board? Mainly remote and hybrid marketing roles.

Hi, have you tried the Otta job board? Mainly remote and hybrid marketing roles.

Yes I've applied to a few and heard nothing back. The majority of jobs advertised have a blurb that says "Few candidates hear
back within 2 weeks" so it doesn't look very promising as a job board. I've also noticed some job postings requiring 4 days in the office - hardly in keeping with a supposedly remote jobs board...

I applied for a role on Otta. the role was with a company that sounded too good to be true.

I checked on Glassdoor and the reviews were atrocious. Scarily so.

Many of the remote roles aren't actually remote!

I’ve been poking around on job sites with a filter for remote.

I’d say the definition of remote needs updates given “remote” seems to mean 4 days in the office now. 🙄

another far too old data specialist (SQL and its variants/DWH/machine learning) who has no desire to work FT or showing my face at the office for no purpose other than to prove I’m still alive.
