Overtime, what should I do about this?

Last summer I worked many hours of overtime in the run up to the school hols. It was great as I saved lots of extra money for our summer holiday, a luxury I hadn't ever been able to do.

My plan was, after the summer, to again work as much overtime as possible to save for Christmas activities (Panto, ice skating, weekend away etc.)

Except after the summer, no one asked us if we wanted to do any overtime.

Then last week, a colleague asked if I was working overtime this week. I replied I hadn't been asked and they said it was all on messenger chat group and they'd add me to it. So they've added me to group (I wasn't the only person not in it, there are several others too).

Since joining the group I used the search function to find key word overtime, and lo and behold, it's been there all along! Instead of asking face to face, like they used to, they now just ask on messenger group. I am absolutely livid!

What, if anything can I do about this?

Why didn’t you ask your manager after the summer about the possibility of more overtime?

Aa to what you can do now - surely the only thing to do is start working overtime again now.

If you didn't specifically ask about overtime maybe they thought you didn't want any. At my work if anyone wants overtime we ask the manager directly. All you can really do is see when overtime is available and work it.

all you can do is start signing up for overtime. No point in complaining as it won't achieve anything.

I love your attitude of using overtime for family treats. I used to do that when DC were young. I used to get a kick out of working and thinking, that's the panto paid for etc.

I just assumed we would be asked in person as we usually were and wrongly assumed that we weren't asked as there was none available.

I guess this is something I'm just going to have to suck up. I don't really talk to managers unless spoken to. I'm quite shy and wouldn't ask about overtime.

Surely it is not fair that management are using a way to communicate offers of overtime in a way that not everyone can access? They should have made sure everyone was in the group.

Well its no good being 'absolutely livid', but then saying you are 'too shy to speak to the managers' . You either say something, or you dont, but sign up from now on for overtime.

Sorry to dripfeed.

But a few months ago, this same Manager, told our shift not to use social media to contact management out of hours, as the management team felt as if they were on call and some messages didn't get seen etc.

We were asked to only use our work emails to communicate or in person.

I don't have social media (Facebook, Instagram, tiktok, Snapchat etc.) Only fb messenger (as I used to be on fb) and whats app.

I had no idea the messenger group existed until last week.

I think given the circumstances management are being hypocritical by not offering overtime face to face.

They were the ones telling us not to use social media for work interaction
