NHS Senior Engagement Specialist

This post is purely out of curiosity. Met a guy last weekend at a charity event who mentioned he worked for the NHS ICB as a Senior Engagement Specialist. He was properly bigging it up but if I'm honest, I just heard a lot of waffle. It has, however, intrigued me. Also aware a lot of jobs are just fancy job titles that don't mean much at all (have a feeling it is one of those).

Anyone know what this job actually entails and how much it pays? The way he was talking, he made it sound super important and lucrative....

I work in the NHS as stakeholder engagement manager. Pay varies depending on scope, seniority, responsibility etc. A lot of the work is related to communications and marketing. I work in the digital arena, encouraging clinicians to tey new IT solutions.

Every area in England has an ICB and each ICB will have a comms team. It's not niche or special or lucrative 😉

It's the sort of role that anyone clinical will roll their eyes at as it's not meaningful to most clinical staff in anyway. Probably spend 2/3 of his week in meetings. I wouldn't be impressed by that job title.

Thanks for clearing that up lol. The way he was talking sounded like he was on at least 50K or so. He mentioned how he'd be on 70K+ in the future. I was half sucked in by it all and half wondering how much truth was in it.

I've never worked for the NHS so I'm always intrigued by all these different job titles and earning potential.

That's an interesting take as he seemed to talk about it with an air of grandiose as though it was a highly regarded position in the NHS. I try not to get too sucked into things like that but he was talking the talk.

The NHS employs skilled medical professionals. Not sure why you think his job is a “highly regarded position” in comparison - I would not have bought into him bragging about it. NHS public sector; his salary is never going to be that impressive as he has to conform to pay bands.

glad he’s happy with his job, we should all strive to be like him in that regard. Maybe he feels really successful because it’s not a job where a degree is needed, so he could have very well worked his way up from leaving school to securing this £50k role.

Ouch! I work in a team made up of clinicians, techies and project managers. The clinicians are always asking me to get out there around the area, spreading the word about our IT system. I also do a lot of patient focus group which helps with planning services. However, I guess it does depend on the type of engagement with which you are involved.
