No salary advertised - would you apply?

Just seen a temporary part-time job advertised, admin/finance, with salary available on application. However, this actually translates to a discussion if you get invited for interview, which would be well after you have submitted an application form. I am interested in the role as I can't commit to full-time just now (caring for an elderly relative) and temporary works as I don't know what is going to happen mid to long term. I'm not being lazy but don't want to submit all my personal details without knowing the salary. I think I have just answered my own question...would you apply?

It is a huge frustration of mine when jobs don't have salary attached. Its pretty standard in my industry and you just ask for what you want and hope for the best.

The problem with admin work, and I used to be an admin a few years ago, is that it can be anything from minimum wage to £30-35k where I live. So it's frustrating as you can't always be sure by the job description which end it may fall.

I've just applied in the past, but it's annoying.

peeweechigs · 02/02/2023 22:00

Contact them and ask them the range.

makingarunforit · 02/02/2023 22:03

No, I couldn't bothered.

Part-time temporary admin is probably minimum wage so if you're not bothered about how much you earn then maybe crack on?

whizzpopping · 02/02/2023 22:04

This tends to mean that the pay is up for negotiation / budget is flexible.

So I'd say go ahead and apply, wow them at the interview then ask for your desired pay. Obviously nothing is guaranteed but you know, nothing ventured nothing gained etc

TeaCosyApplePie · 02/02/2023 22:04

No unless I have no choice (I.e redundancy). Most of the time the salary isn't competitive at all so it's a waste of my time. Same for jobs with stupid long application forms. Never have I ever been called for interview from one of those! Companies can have my cv and like it or lump it Grin

BanjoKnockers · 02/02/2023 22:08

I mean to save you the hassle of a pointless interview you could put your required salary in the covering letter and politely tell them not to waste your time if they won't pay you it.

Iheartmysmart · 02/02/2023 22:10

I always assume adverts like that will try and pay as little as they possibly can.

AuroraForever · 02/02/2023 22:11

Email them and ask. Why waste your time to apply then interview only to find out the pay will likely be £9.50 an hour or something equally ridiculous with very little wriggle room.

GoldilockMom · 02/02/2023 22:11

Apply and have in mind what you want to be paid, and tell them.

CheesenCrackersmm · 02/02/2023 22:15

If they do not list the salary it means it is low compared to similar jobs.

I would not go to the bother of applying unless you are desperate.

jellycakeandicecream · 02/02/2023 22:17

“Competitive Salary”

Yes, it’s competing against my bills.

validnumber · 02/02/2023 22:22

How long would it take to apply?
Can't you just email your cv and a quick letter which you can use for every job ?
You may not even get an interview.

cstaff · 02/02/2023 22:31

An advertised job with no salary listed is either minimum wage or a top of the range well paid job that they want you to negotiate and hope you aim lower rather than higher.

Osteospermum · 03/02/2023 01:53

Thanks all, I’m going to check the application form again and take a view as I’ve got 2 others to apply to this weekend.

I think employers should write something like ‘salary from £xxx based on experience’ or as someone said, have a range with min/max, then at least you have an idea and know it’s up for negotiation and they also avoid getting pointless applications that are under/over qualified.

if you feel so strongly about that, do not waste your time applying and pondering about that.

Personally, if they cannot be bothered to tell you what you will earn for an admin position, it seems to me they won’t be clear enough on what is job, hours, responsibilities, etc. They are taking the mickey from day one.

nca89 · 03/02/2023 19:26

If it was just a CV I might, but if they expect me to put any effort in like a covering letter, formal interview etc I'm not doing anything until I know it's in a salary range that is acceptable.

Hell no!
