AIBU negotiating pay?
lowclouds · 30/01/2023 09:55
I've been offered a new job in my organisation. It's a more senior role, but 8 hours per week less.
I'm not very experienced in this area, and didn't really expect to get the job, so am thrilled I've been offered it. I know that this vacancy has been readvertised and they've struggled to fill it. It's quite a jump up for me and I lack experience but am excited.
I expect they will start me at the bottom of the salary band, which as a full time salary is a chunk more than I'm currently earning. But because of the reduced hours, it will be a slight pay cut in real 'take home' terms.
So my question... WIBU to put me up a notch on the band so that it will match my current actual take home pay? Would that be really cheeky considering my lack of experience and that I'm working fewer hours?
I find pay negotiation awkward so just wondered how people would feel about this as a request.

Sorry typo - it should say:
*WIBU to ask them to put me a notch up on the salary band

I think if you phrase it that you can't take a pay cut to takr the job, why is this less hours though? Is it your choice?

Not my choice, it's just the role is advertised as fewer hours. It's probably because of their budget or just requirements of the role.

Really? Even though it's 8 hours a week less work?

Thanks for the confidence! This is what I need.
I recently asked my manager for around £1k a year extra (for a valid reason, with performance evidence to back it up) and she was extremely sniffy and awkward about it even though I knew there was money in the budget.
I think it's so sector dependent as well, I'm not private sector so I think sometimes negotiation is not seen as the norm.
