deadline for paying tax after submitting tax return

StillWantingADog · 25/01/2023 22:20

so I submitted my tax return this evening and have a hefty bill to pay (no surprise)

But I then go to pay the bill and I can't because I'm 80p in credit apparently.
So it takes 72 hours to show the bill in my account so that I can actually pay it?

How can the deadline to submit and deadline to pay both be the same day if it takes 72 hours for the submission to update my balance? Or I am wrong about having to pay by the 31st....either way will I get some kind of email to say I can pay it or do I have to log on and check?

They really do not make it easy do they.

I just did my tax return and it turned out I was 65p in credit. So I just knocked 65p off the amount the calculations stated I owed and then paid. Job done

StillWantingADog · 25/01/2023 22:40

@Haricot But how? It literally won’t let me pay as there is nothing on the account

My self assessmentcalculation said I needed to pay some tax but the parent page said I owed no tax. I went to the pay page and just put in the amount my self assessment said and paid. It went through. Hope I haven't complicated things.

I did them same ...just put in the amount from the calculations.

Just pay using online banking :

www.gov.uk/pay-self-assessment-tax-bill/bank-details

You need to quote your UTR number as your payment reference.

The payment deadline is 31 January.

It sounds like there may be a discrepancy between the information on your tax return and the information that the tax office has on file for you. This could be causing a delay in updating your account balance and making it available for payment.
The deadline for submitting your tax return and the deadline for paying your taxes are usually the same day, which is January 31st in the UK. It's possible that you may have missed the deadline and may have to pay a penalty

IClaudine · 26/01/2023 07:56

But it isn't the 31st yet, so why would OP have a fine to pay?

Beamur · 26/01/2023 07:56

I just paid mine through the link shown above. If you have the number required and the amount it should be accepted.

It won’t be because of that it takes up to 72 hours for the balance to update on the account regardless, sometimes it’s quicker but this time of year it’s generally not, although it usually shows by next day rather than full 72 hours. Op can still pay before amount is showing on her account as others have explained

Espanolespie · 26/01/2023 07:59

Just pay the amount on the calculation page, as pp says it can take up to 72 hours to update with the actual amount but calculation should be right. I ended up with a slight overpayment last time but you can sort that after.

And how can she possibly have missed the payment deadline if deadline is 31st today is 26th and she’s already filed?

AnotherAppleThief · 26/01/2023 07:59

It's a maximum of 72 hours to update anyway, mine was much quicker so check back tomorrow morning and tomorrow evening.

Deathbyfluffy · 26/01/2023 08:00

Just pay by BACS, it’s done then.

Nw22 · 26/01/2023 08:00

Surely it would just be easier to submit your return earlier

It's easier to make the payment in a normal way through your online banking. This is a non issue.

Mine says I’m in credit but I still owe money on account for next year. But this doesn’t have to be paid until 31st of July, not January.

I was very happy to see it that ahah. Even though it’s because my income has fallen from the previous year. Still nice.

EspeciallyDetermined · 26/01/2023 08:29

It is more complicated if you have payments in advance for the following year (I have to pay some in Jan some in July), but mine did update pretty quickly this year.

Does everyone not see the same thing, on mine it's quite clear how much to pay in Jan and how much in July

StillWantingADog · 26/01/2023 12:27

thanks for the advice I will do a bank transfer today for the stated amount even though my balance has not yet updated.

@Nw22 yes clearly and I shall try and remember for next year but I didn't think it was totally crazy to assume you could submit and pay at the same time. As it stands I can if I do a bank transfer so I shall do that.
The whole thing is very poorly worded IMO.

Not immediately no, it takes a day or two for them to calculate and update mine. Possibly because my income varies massively from year to year.
