Is this normal?

I've had issues with work for a while now so not sure if this is a normal thing or if I'm just finding fault because I'm not happy there.
Yesterday, my manager asked me for some documents to get a dbs check done. I was a little puzzled as I did one when I first applied, but when I questioned it I was told it just came up on the system that it needs doing again.
Today I've had a call from management (I'm not working until this weekend as I agreed to pick up the 12 hour shifts) and I've been told I HAVE to go into work tomorrow to drop the documents off - I don't work locally, get the train to work and back and they know this, but said I will face disciplinary action if I don't!
I really don't want to spend extra money getting a train to work and back to drop off some paperwork, but I've also been told it can't be sent via email either.
Do I have a leg to stand on or should I suck it up and get on with it?

DBS checks last a year, has it been a year since your last one? Does seem a bit unreasonable that you HAVE to drop it off tomorrow though. DBS checks often take weeks to come through so I don't know why a few days would make much difference.

DBS checks last a year - no, they don't. They don't have any specific expiry period. However, a DBS check is not a one-off thing. It is a snapshot so doesn't tell your employer about anything that happens after the check. Employers will therefore generally carry out a new check from time to time. A check every 3 years is recommended, but it is up to the employer whether they stick with that or go with more or less frequent checks.

They cannot force you to go to the office outside your normal working hours unless your contract specifically gives them that right. Unfortunately, they may still try to discipline you if you don't comply. You will, however, need to be present with your documents at a time when someone who is authorised to validate your documents is working.

No, I've been working there 8 months.
One of the reasons I went for this particular job was because it was advertised as "extremely flexible".
Starting to think I read it wrong and it meant I need to be extremely flexible! (I didn't, just to add).

8 months is a bit quick to be doing a second DBS check unless something has happened to make them think there could be new information.

Nothing has happened - at least not in the way of anything that would come up on a dbs check.
The only issue is management themselves - even if I didn't have the problems I've had with them, they're extremely rude to other staff members. Constant sighing, eye rolling, snapping...one poor lady left last week as she was reduced to tears and she'd only started last month.
I've thought about handing my notice in but I adore the people I care for and hate the thought of leaving them.

It sounds like there is something going on there. Maybe they didn’t do the check when they should have and have just realised. Maybe an inspection is looming?
