Work

Back to work - 3 days?

I am going soon back to work as my maternity leave ends.

The nursery advised that they can only keep my DD for 3 days, Monday, Tuesday and Friday.

This means that I will be able to work on these 3 days and have Wednesday & Thursday off.

In September we will be able to rethink the whole thing as the nursery will get more available spaces/days.

What do you think?

Firstly what do you think of a 3 day week at work?

And secondly what do you think about having Wednesdays & Thursdays off work?

Will it work?

It really depends on what you do and what your workplace think. If you’re a cleaner/security guard/receptionist etc that is not reliant on any continuity, then it shouldn’t be an issue. If you have a job that relies on continuity then it could be an issue. For example if you’re an engineer that will need to do a handover to someone else to pick up your work, or you’re uncontactable for 2 days with nobody to cover your work it could be more of a challenge.

I guess this is a question for your employer.

You need to ask your employer

I do an office-based job and found consecutive days much better for continuity. Tues-Thurs was ideal as most meetings fall on those days. I also did a few months of non-ideal days while waiting for a nursery place which was ok-ish in the short term!

Mondays and Fridays are the worst days to work because of the bank holidays. I wouldn't want to put my DC in nursery not doing consecutive days, I like DC to have the routine of 3 days nursery, 4 days off. Whether 3 days works for your work will completely depend on your job role.
