What’s it like out there?

I work in the IT sector, years of experience for the same big company in sales, product development, bit of project management but not years. Always excelled in my roles. The opportunity may come up soon for voluntary redundancy and this time I’m thinking about it, as it will be a good package. However I’m getting cold feet about my ability to get into another role…one day I’m thinking yes I’ll be snapped up probably for more money as a lot of my colleagues have, but on the other hand I hear stories of people out of work for years and there have been a lot of lay offs in big tech recently…so guess what I’m asking is anyone have experience of what the market is like out there in tech? Just wanting reassurance although I know everyone is different..I’m not in a position to start applying yet as don’t know if I’ll get offered this redundancy.

I'm in tech also took redundancy, three months in and still looking for a job. Grand scheme of things it's not that long and the job market has really picked up since new year. I am in the interview process for several positions now.
Just make sure your CV is upto date and LinkedIn also. I would get LinkedIn premium so recruiters can reach out to you as the opportunities I have now are through there.

How old are you?

it’s not fair, but my friends over 50 have been struggling to get back into IT/Tech after redundancy

am in IT myself, and 50, and not sure I would

you are probably much younger though

I’m 37…3 months isn’t too bad really, I just worry it’ll be a year! LinkedIn premium is a good shout. So unfair about over 50’s, imo experience counts for a lot and younger people often struggle more in big organisations. Also have 2 young kids so need WFH at least most of the time to work around nursery and school which complicates things

There are a lot of remote positions out there at the moment, the market is still strong. I'm not based in a big city and when speaking to certain recruiters have been told I should lower my expectations in terms of salary/wfh etc - don't pay attention to this. Know your worth and the skills you have!
I would start networking now, have those initial conversations about what is out there and take it from there. You may even come across a role that you decide to move to without taking redundancy.
