Is a second job worth it?

I currently work full time as a Branch Manager in retail and my monthly take home is roughly £2150 a month! I work 37.5 hours per week in that job!
I’m thinking about taking up a second job elsewhere for 16-20 hours a week - I’m used to working up to 60 hours in my last job so hours don’t bother me, but just wondered if it would be worth it with tax? If I took on this job advertised, It will top my monthly income up to around £2910 - I’m trying to save for a mortgage at the moment and looking to pay off debts firsthand to put me in a good position. Anyone else done this?

Yes. When I was saving for a deposit for my first mortgage, I worked about 50 hours in my main, salaried job and then used to do bar work 2 nights a week, and I'd do some ad hoc babysitting as well.

As well as the money I was earning, it also meant I wasn't spending on anything unnecessary for those 18 months / 2 years.

You'd have to take account of anything you were paying out for (travel, for example or maybe even parking if you have to go into a City Centre).

Whether it is "worth it" is very personal to you.
I know it was to me.

need to work out your new gross combined income and see if you still stay in the same tax band. TBH even if you earned a little more and moved into the next tax band it would only be on that amount. The overall take home pay is what matters

Part of the reason I won't go back to retail is because of the crap hours for the rubbish pay, albeit you sound to be on good money, obviously working in retail and being a manager shows you have customer experience and must be able to sell, that being said why not look for a sales position which offers a basic salary with commission, I.e. motor, housing, furniture. You could be taking home more than what you earning now some months and what you get more than expected you could bank towards a deposit.

Check that your contract allows a second job - many don’t or require you to get permission first.
