If you get a confirmed job offer, I would approach your current employer and say it's in everyone's best interests for them to facilitate a smooth exit from their company and enable you to secure new employment, so please can they just give a generic reference to confirm your job title and dates of employment.

I work in HR and the policy in most organisations is to confirm dates of employment only to avoid any legal risks. I would agree that it would be easier all round for them to facilitate you leaving and not to put any barriers up.

Depends on your job.
In teaching/ headship, this would be noted on your reference.
In my LA it is also standard aspect of the application form.

Do you need to use your current job as a reference?

Are you in a union? If so, your rep may be able to negotiate an agreed reference with your employer.

You should be able to negotiate an agreed reference with your employer. It depends on the issues e.g. if it's safeguarding related then they may have a legal duty to disclose.

If it's "just" performance related, then you could possibly agree they would just confirm your dates of work and formal disciplinary record, or similar.

But contact your union for support as well- they may be able to send a local officer etc to help.

It’s not in their interests to do that, pips are usually the first step in managing someone out. So putting a spanner in your new job would be a spectacular own goal. However there is an element of would they feel morally obligated if they felt the performance issues were signficant
