Business consultant

I’m toying with the idea of moving from the civil service into business consultancy. I have a policy and project management background.

The main driver is a desire for a larger salary. In the civil service I can only earn more by going for promotion and I have no interest in the more senior positions as they come with a huge amount of responsibility and line manager duties and not a great deal more pay.

Any business consultants out there who would recommend it as a career? And is the role suited to part time working?

'Business Consultant' is a vague title, I think you need to be more specific. For a start, prepare some CVs for the relevant roles you have played, e.g. Project Manager & then approach some agencies to see what they can offer. Look carefully at their T&Cs, especially around exclusivity, once you are established you will want to be taking on contracts in your own right without having an agency take their cut.

I’m not being more specific because the roles I have been looking at are quite vague. They are mostly with large consultancies like BAE. I definitely don’t want to go back into project management because I found that job quite thankless.

I agree with you that I should update my CV and approach some agencies. Thanks.

I have done it for 15 years freelance and then for the last year for a company.
I focus on Sales strategy and Business Planning, I don’t have any formal qualifications but I worked in Sales and Sales Management for big corps then after I started a family I set up my own Consultancy and worked for a variety of SMEs. I also helped set up another 2 companies and helped a couple of others to exit.
I absolutely love it, it’s well paid and pretty flexible but I have either been SE or (now) work for a small company so I am not sure how flexible a larger employer would be
