My daughter can’t find work!

I’m really in despair, my daughter is 22, living In the UK having moved from Ireland so that she can study. No matter where she applies or what she applies to for work she doesn’t even get an interview. Her CV is good with two previous jobs on it. I can’t continue funding her, it’s not possible anymore, please please can anybody help and guide us where to look?

I can't see home care assistant jobs turning her down as they're desperate for carers - although I appreciate it's not for everyone and the moneys not great

FurAndFeathers · 21/01/2023 07:37

@Dottypotz has she applied for all of these roles advertised via the students union?
jobshop.bristolsu.org.uk

IwishIwasSupermum · 21/01/2023 07:37

Try Primark, DS is a student, he gets 4 hour shifts 3/4 times a week, late shift is 3-7, it’s working well around his course, due to COL they provide food before/after shift, it’s student fodder, noodles etc,

FurAndFeathers · 21/01/2023 07:39

Also lots of vacancies via UWE www.thestudentsunion.co.uk/opportunities/jobs/browse/

Dibbydoos · 21/01/2023 07:43

There may be loads of vacancies, but she won't be the only applicant.
Def have her cv reviewed.
She does know you can fund her indefinitely, doesnt she?
Are there any bar work, fast food, hotel or waiting jobs around? Evening and weekend hours would fit the bill.
She could drop her CV off at a few places too - I know this is not how it works for big chains but small independents still take paper CVs.
She will land a job iuoyou can hold on a little longer.

TolkiensFallow · 21/01/2023 07:59

Can the university help? This seems odd with the number of entry level jobs about.

Whats her approach? Is she applying for specific vacancies or is she just handing out her cv? I never had much luck with the latter approach. Is she writing a tailored cover letter to each employer?

Beachbreak2411 · 21/01/2023 08:00

Something doesn’t add up! Hospitality are crying out for staff! Look on indeed; there are tons of jobs on there in Bristol. Sounds like she doesn’t want to work.

NerrSnerr · 21/01/2023 08:04

Has she seen this one? Looks like they're hiring lots of people.

Has your DD tried applying for cleaning jobs? My DD is a student in a similarly-sized city and she cleans offices in the evenings. Says she had lots of job offers - they are crying out for cleaners and the pay is very good. (She has dyspraxia and ADHD.)

lanbro · 21/01/2023 08:10

If she's just sending out a generic cv for different roles that's probably it. I get cvs in for my cafe all the time that focus on all their child care experience, for example. I'm not going to waste time training up someone who will most likely leave when they find something more up their street so I don't bother to interview.

SeasonFinale · 21/01/2023 08:12

My son is at uni in Bristol. There is indeed plenty of work out there. There are apps called Stint and also an agency called Dough where you can pick up ad hoc hospitality shifts to suit your college schedule. Also if she were to take her CV round the restaurants there are plenty looking for more permanent staff.

CliffsofMohair · 21/01/2023 08:15

ProfYaffle · 21/01/2023 07:21

Try the College she's attending. My dd is at Uni in Bristol and works as a student ambassador through the Uni. It's quite common for FE/HE establishments to employ students in a variety of capacities.

She’s prob at Bristol not in FE. We use college to describe all third level in Ireland.

sashagabadon · 21/01/2023 08:16

my dd in london has an app called “ shift” and she does shifts in various restaurants and bakeries around london. They have 4 hour shifts or longer and you choose what you want to do. Pizza express pops up a lot and Gail’s bakery and even the restaurant in the shard where she gets good tips. Not sure if it also In Bristol but it might be?

sashagabadon · 21/01/2023 08:19

Sorry app might be called stint not shift

GoldilockMom · 21/01/2023 08:19

I’ve just looked on LinkedIn - get the app and there are loads of Sales assistant jobs
I’ve not looked at other professions.

She needs to join - it’s free

Redredrobingoesbobobbobin · 21/01/2023 08:20

Outing but fuck it. If she really wants work there are so many jobs in Bristol for support workers away from hospitals if she doesn’t want to be an HCA. There are tonnes of bank shifts in the hospitals, it’s a busy city with loads of hospitals and care agencies.

also wearhouse jobs if she can travel a little, that may be trickier.

She may need to widen her search.

OverTheRubicon · 21/01/2023 08:22

She's not telling you the truth. Sooooo many jobs around at the moment, she's either got a poor CV, isn't applying or is filtering exceptionally highly.

It doesn't need to be care work or hospitality either (though those would help with cash while she finds something she might want to do longer term), there are plenty of jobs that could lead to a career path too.

Everybodywants · 21/01/2023 08:23

Encourage her into a hospitality role. She will never be out of work. Enjoyable and social work and keeps you fit being on your feet and doing stocking up etc. There is a recruitment crisis on if she put her mind to it she would have a trial shift by tonight.

Howmanysleepsnow · 21/01/2023 08:27

She could definitely get a HCA job without training, IF she’s a caring person. Not NHS, but nursing homes. Has she tried calling and asking if they have bank jobs/ weekend jobs?
Alternatively trampoline/ ninja warrior centres employ lots of 16-20yos and don’t look for experience. They’re often busier at weekends/ evenings too as their target market is in school when your daughter is in uni so need staff then

Disneygirl37 · 21/01/2023 08:27

How many is she applying for a week? For lots of job there are so many applicants in so it a numbers game. My daughter was applying for 10-20 jobs a week when she was looking for part time work. She needs to decide what type of job and just apply for a few every day at least. She used indeed, checked daily and applied for jobs as soon as they went on there.
We live in a similar sized city.

ColadhSamh · 21/01/2023 08:27

What periods of time has she worked in her almost 5 years of studying? At 22 you have to say you can no longer afford to support her and mean it. As others have said there are plenty of jobs so either she's not trying very hard, too fussy or feels that the bank of Mammy will be there for as long as she needs it.
Time to get tough, show her this thread if necessary and give her a cut off date when your funding will stop.

Fedupofdiets · 21/01/2023 08:27

23mum · 21/01/2023 07:23

I can't see home care assistant jobs turning her down as they're desperate for carers - although I appreciate it's not for everyone and the moneys not great

You also need a car to do home care work. Maybe she could try care homes if she is interested in care work op? My DD is at Uni in Bath and also had no problem walking into a zero hour contract hospitality role. Has she looked on Indeed?

SauSest · 21/01/2023 08:29

Is she just applying online @Dottypotz ?
My student DD applied to loads hospitality jobs advertised through indeed and various others online and got no responses. These same places are STILL advertising for staff!
She went into a couple of places with her CV and asked for manager and had a job in a restaurant by the end of the day.
There's literally loads of jobs in uk at moment but the online recruitment sometimes fails.

AlisonDonut · 21/01/2023 08:33

Remember by law she is entitled to an interview if she has a disability

@Humphplumf what law is this?

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 21/01/2023 08:41

I know of an assisted living facility in Nailsea due to open any day now for young disabled adults. They are desperately looking for staff. No experience required as you are trained on the job.
