Does anyone have a job they actually enjoy. That offers enough to live on.

Just that really. Most of my peers are teachers, nhs and public sector workers. All stressed, all skint.. bar a couple.

Is there actually any nice jobs out there, that are easy to access and offer work/ life balance?

If you were to have a realistic career change what would you do?

Civil servant working in policy development. Decent salary, flexible and interesting work. Can be quite long hours and stressful at times but it balances out with quieter periods.

Snugglemonkey · 16/01/2023 22:10

I work with people, without blood in a caring type role, in school hours, from my home. It takes a very long time, lots of voluntary hours and a lot of money in course fees to get the qualifications I have though. I got lucky and got a scholarship for a chunk of it. It really was worth all that I self funded though, as a lot of people work for less money in my field, but I am very specialised. Can you train more in your current field to up your pay bracket and choices?

Business development manager - I love it! WFH permanently other than when I’m out seeing clients. Rarely have to stay away from home - maybe once/twice a year for 1-2 nights at most. Good salary with car allowance and commission, very little pressure from management, targets but no pressure if not met, not micro managed in any way. The actual job is relatively non taxing. Amazing work/life balance - I get to do the school run either side of the day everyday and often finish early. Plus I can block out my diary to solely WFH during school holidays. As a result I work hard at my job because I respect my managers and the company. Best job I have ever had.

I'm a special needs teacher and I absolutely love it. Salary is pretty decent 40k (dh earns plenty so I don't need a big salary) and I spent today swimming, going for a walk and doing a bit of maths

I get one day a week CCR which I do at home. So I don't do any other evening work and usually in 8.30-4

I love my kids and I only have 5 pupils in my class.

Id hate anything financy or competitive. I prefer to work with people but to have less responsibility. Id like a caring type job but im crap with blood so unfortunately that rules loads out.
Id prefer an environment that isnt male dominated.

I'm a nanny and that fits all your requirements.

The only thing is long hours and you do really need to live in London.

Wow this is fabulous. Well done you. I cant imagine there are many jobs like this though??

More than you’d think! There is a shortage of land agents. You can also do live out jobs for people like National Trust, Crown Estates or Forestry Commission. I did my grad job with the National Trust and used to spend my days out in the Lake District with my two dogs!

Newmum738 · 16/01/2023 22:39

I do! Charity is the sector for me!

ChocolateTea · 16/01/2023 22:42

I’m a teacher, love my job, love the holidays and my pay is enough for my life style and to enable me to save 25% of it currently monthly and still enjoy extras etc. yes workload is extreme at times, but I am lucky I am in a good school from reading some horror stories!

Greensleevevssnotnose · 16/01/2023 22:43

No qualifications just experience. Started 2018 financial sales WFH £40k basic ote ,£60k, cleared £100k last year. Quite pressured I suppose. I have had a few tantrums but I have a fun side hustle that clears about 20k so I take time off when it gets too much and concentrate on thatt. Just had 6 weeks off and stated back today for another 6 month head down bum up stint.

vvork · 16/01/2023 22:51

@SnarkyBag tell me more... (NHS OT here)

Like several posters, I work in comms.

I've worked my way up and now run a function in a medium sized US-based public company (I'm a Vice President).

I earn a healthy salary, receive a car allowance, shares, a great aat pension.

I love my team, my leaders are respectful and flexible. I mainly WFH.

But as someone said above, they absolutely get their 'pound of flesh' from me. I rarely switch off.

Absolutely not ha, sorry nannying is not for me. I only really like my children and a select few others, I know thats bad but at least im honest. I'd get sacked after 5 minutes. I could tolerate teens much better and have worked with them before. But teens dont really need a nanny. I sound horrible, im honestly not. Ha.

I work in a legal firm, I got really lucky with it. Been there 5 months after being unemployed for 15 years

Mydogatemypurse · 16/01/2023 23:07

My issue with finance is that I dont think id be very good at it. I have ADHD and I think I would balls everything up through lack of attention to detail, this applies to me for anything IT based too.
Im not bothered about earning a lot. Just to have a nice balance.

Media relations, really good salary and love my job, before this I was a journalist, loved that too but money was crap

bness · 16/01/2023 23:16

I do. I love my job. I started from scratch with a passing interest in evening courses in psychotherapy, worked for a year at less than £10 an hour, but within 4 years worked my way up to local authority director level. Love my job commissioning mental health programmes, its wfh unless I'm engaging with communities, fabulous work life balance, supportive team, and I love love love feeling like I am making a real, tangible difference to communities and people's lives. Dream role

This is an incredibly interesting thread - Thankyou for starting it! I’m thinking of a career change so this has been brilliant to read

Rosecottage888 · 16/01/2023 23:41

Another Facilities Management one here, I absolutely love it, senior leadership role. My manager values our opinions and we have total autonomy with our work, as long as we deliver he doesn't care how or when we do it. I wouldn't change my job or the team I work with for the world.

9 years ago I was on benefits struggling to find a job after leaving ex and started as a part time maintenance planner. I have worked my way up over the years and very proud of my career.

Rosecottage888 · 16/01/2023 23:42

Oh and WFH majority of the time and go into the office once or twice a month for client meetings.

Theseboobsweremadeforwalking · 16/01/2023 23:44

@Greensleevevssnotnose dying to know what your 20k fun side hussle is, please tell! I've tried a couple but make no money!

RememberNancyDrew · 17/01/2023 00:17

Paralegal. No qualifications needed for entry. I am in the states and make $90,000 US dollars (not sure what that is in the UK).

Low stress, no career ladder to speak of so no time spent positioning for promotions. I have an office but no one cares if I am in the office or working from home. No overtime needed right now but if I worked it, I would be paid extra.
