Working from home resentment
Mammut · 13/01/2023 18:45
I’ve worked at home since the first lockdown. My job requires occasional travel but apart from that I’m in the house all day. There are lots of benefits of this of course, but I’m becoming increasingly resentful of the space it takes up in my house. I work in our small spare bedroom atm and the desk, screens, big chair etc just take over the whole room so it’s a nice space to use for anything else. I’m just resentful that my employers have managed to make me responsible for providing a work space. Does anyone else feel like this?
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/01/2023 18:46
Do they offer an office space to use?
Reluctantadult · 13/01/2023 18:48
I know on paper I'm lucky. But I'm getting fed up with wfh too. I'm sort of trapped by the convenience! It means I can work 9-3 and leg it to school. But I've got a desk, office chair and monitor in my living room. And I'm on my own all day.
VladmirsPoutine · 13/01/2023 18:49
Can you see what you can reasonably streamline? Find a co-working space? Tell your boss that you'd rather do some work from the office?
I'm not sure tbh - working from home is possibly after the smartphone the next best thing to become common-place, in my very humble opinion.

I can use the office occasionally, and I do go in from time to time but I can’t go in full time so I still need to have all the set up at home.

As you say, there are benefits too, so you just need to consider whether the benefits outweigh the costs.
Merple · 13/01/2023 18:52
No but I go in two days a week. The benefits far outweigh the costs for me. Benefits being much more time, not having to buy so many work clothes, a lot more sleep and exercise time. Time to make healthier meals. Way less pointless meetings. Much less stress. If it doesn't suit you though, I'd find something else.

No.
Find an office job if it bothers you.
It was an office based job when I applied.
illiterato · 13/01/2023 18:52
Sorry- realised that sounded snarky and wasn't intended to. It's just that I feel like the wfh sheen is wearing off for a lot of people, but its a trade off between time and commute savings vs isolation and no work/home separation.
Orangebadger · 13/01/2023 18:52
I work 2 jobs, one cannot be at home, the other at home. Only started this 6 months ago. It's really not for me at all, so I get it. Takes over the house and for me I like to get out of the house and see others and just life! WFH is not for everyone.
S72 · 13/01/2023 18:53
Do you want to be office based full time? Have you discussed this with your employer?
The pros and cons of the office/WFH are so subjective.
I much prefer WFH, even without the luxury of a spare bedroom. My "home office" set up takes over my small lounge, but it is worth it compared to a 3hr round trip commute and expensive rail fares.

Is it your employer saying you cannot go in all the time? What's their reasoning for that?

Yes that’s exactly how I feel. It’s very convenient, and I get more done but I miss contact with people in real life.

It totally is.

Same here, it’s been an absolute game changer for me, I love hybrid working

The spare room is a recent thing as one of my kids has moved out. It’s much better than many of my more ad hoc room jumping arrangements during the pandemic. I know I’m lucky. My office is a 20 drive away so never had a horrible commute.

I hate wfh. I implemented a policy of 3 in office and 2 at home. I go in all 5...
converseandjeans · 13/01/2023 19:04
I would hate it. It's difficult getting up and out in the winter but once I am there I am fine. I teach & hated live lessons & setting work remotely.
Quordle · 13/01/2023 19:04
I can totally imagine. My husband is self-employed and WHF long before it was commonplace. We purposefully bought a house in which he would have a dedicated office, and treated that as a cost of self-employment. It was a massive consideration for us. It must be even more annoying for people who didn't particularly sign up to WFH now that energy bills are so high.

Yes I love all that too. I just don’t like some aspects. I think I’m just having a moan really. My employer is the only organisation that offers my role so if I want to keep doing what I do I can’t get another job.
HermioneWeasley · 13/01/2023 19:11
You say you have the choice to go into the office, so I’m not sure why you’re resentful?
AltheaVestr1t · 13/01/2023 19:11
I have a dedicated office space, which might be the crucial difference, but I find WFH massively benefits my wellbeing and I won't ever go into full time into an office again.
illiterato · 13/01/2023 19:12
I would just go in every day if I was only 20 mins away. If capacity is an issue, maybe have a chat with your boss, say you'd rather be office based more frequently and see what they say.
