Handing notice on without job

Peckhaminn · 10/01/2023 16:53

Hi all. My work is horrendous. I mean my mental health has taken a right plunge. Micro management, spoken to like shit, shouted at in front of other colleagues, job role has changed 3 times in 8 months from PA to a heavily targeted sales role and when promised this wouldn't be the case. I want to hand my notice in without a job lined up. I am so so exhausted and pissed off. The company cannot keep staff because we are treated like shit. I've put up with a lot. I have £17k savings I can live off for the meantime and maybe have a job lined up from Friday which I don't want but might have to take. Advice?

Well I can’t advise you but I’m there with you buddy. I took a leap of faith. Gave my notice in December. Wanted to clear my head and look after my mental health. I’m looking for another job now.

JennyForeigner · 10/01/2023 17:07

Sometimes it's your only option and your job sounds awful. Good luck with it - there is a lot out there at the moment.

Perfect28 · 10/01/2023 17:08

Do it. Life is too short. There's a huge shortage of workers now so be picky!

whatisforteamum · 10/01/2023 17:09

I would take 2 days sick plus w end and really weigh up the pros and cons.
Sounds dreadful tbh.

pinneddownbytabbies · 10/01/2023 17:13

Do it. And I speak as someone who's done it twice. No regrets whatsoever. I was walking on air afterwards, the look on their face is priceless when you tell them you don't even have a job to go to, you've just had enough of them.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/01/2023 17:17

Do it. Take a few weeks off, then sign up with an agency. Sod 'em. I did the same when my job changed and I was fed up of the clique and the new system that didn't work properly and the management I couldn't and didn't trust.

Mental and physical health is the most important thing you have. Care for it.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 10/01/2023 17:17

I did this! Same sort of situation. The job was so stressful. Office toxic it was horrible. We had a new boss who overheard me saying some unsavoury things which I do regret but I was at my limit. I resigned that day. Next day I apologised and had a chat with her where I gave her my resignation letter. She let me go to interviews and stuff (was very difficult to get time off). I ended up with a temp job then a permanent one and the temp one also offered me a perm role. I've been at my new company four years now and moved into a different role last year so I don't regret it. My mental health would never have survived that place.

MeanderingGently · 10/01/2023 17:18

I'm another one who says just do it....hand in your notice and walk out. Don't tell them you haven't anything to go to, they don't need to know that. If it was me, I'd tell them how shit they all are and walk off, but you might prefer not to do that....
There are plenty of jobs about to be had, and you have savings to tide you over; life is too short and your mental health too precious. Good luck!

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 10/01/2023 17:20

Yes, resign, you have the savings to cover you and you'll feel a million times better out of there. But also I'd be looking into something like constructive dismissal. Are you in a union that you could speak to, otherwise, ACAS?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 10/01/2023 17:20

I worked my notice as I wanted a reference by the way. I did have a holiday booked for one of the four weeks though. Had no savings but my DH earns enough to cover the bills just nothing else.

Keep your powder dry for a day or two. Quietly sort your desk out, and take any personal possessions home. With one of mine, I was really unhappy, Dp and I talked it over, and I put my resignation letter through the company's letter box on the Sunday night and just didn't turn up on the Monday morning. The other time, I had a stand-up row with my boss, told her I would no longer tolerate being spoken to like that, grabbed my bag and coat and marched out. Her jaw practically hit the floor, it was great.

CremeEggThief · 10/01/2023 17:31

Go for it. You are in a very fortunate position with the savings you have, so there's nothing to stop you!

MaverickGooseGoose · 10/01/2023 17:35

Do it. You have savings. What industry?

junglistmassive · 10/01/2023 17:36

I'm a recruiter and I've just registered two people with good experience who have decided to do this. No judgement, and I just explained the situation to the potential employer.

CuriousMama · 10/01/2023 17:38

Absolutely do it!!!!

Stress shortens your life. You have savings and will get another job soon. Go for a less stressful one for now. Keep us posted I'm rooting for you ❤️

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/01/2023 17:40

I did this in October, I was dangerously close to some sort of breakdown. If you can afford it then do it. Life’s too short! I have signed up for temping and am starting my first placement tomorrow. There are lots of jobs out there but I have found job hunting quite challenging over Christmas. Raring to go now!

ItisallPooh · 10/01/2023 18:25

I did it! I am very risk averse and always worry about money (even when financially we have been ok)
However, I worked somewhere absolutely horrific. I went for a routine hospital appointment. I hadn't been feeling great but kept soldiering on. The hospital took one look at me and admitted me. I called work to say I wouldn't be back in the afternoon after all. They called me extremely unprofessional and ranted at me. They did this whilst doctors were attaching drips to the arm not holding the phone.
I was in hospital for 3 weeks so it was pretty serious.
I went back to work after another 3 weeks. I discovered lots of changes and that no-one had said a word about Ofsted visiting the school. I was being observed on my first morning after a 6 week absence. School actually wanted me to crumble so they could put it on record that I was shit.
I actually pulled an amazing lesson out of the air and Ofsted were really impressed. They had no idea this was my first day back. They wanted to interview me afterwards and I told them Everything. That possibly wasn't in the school's best interest but by that point I had had enough. There had been many, many things in previous years that I just put up with but this was the final straw.
Straight after talking to the inspector I went down to the head and resigned. Then I called my DH!
I worked my notice but knew I made the right decision. The place was so toxic and didn't value the staff at all.
I had no idea if I even wanted to stay in teaching or do something totally different.
I did supply work and discovered it was the school not the job making me miserable. I'm now very happily employed in another fabulous school.

Do it. Your energy is best spent apply for jobs that you want not working in a job you hate

Thank goodness you got out. That sounds horrific.
