Entry level civil service

I’m trying to find an entry level job in the civil service (I’m not fussy on the role or department or salary), but I can’t find anything.

I’ve been following the jobs search for a month or two now and all seem to want very specific experience/ knowledge and qualifications.

I have been employed in education for about 10 years, so I have general experience and skills- but nothing as specific as what they are asking for!

Should I be searching for something specific in the “search” box? Has anyone got any other advice?

Just search your location and sort by lowest salary.

Good luck, I'm starting with them after a long time out of work. The recruitment process has been a bit of a bugger but I've struggled to get back into my old sector so I'm happy.

I know people are complaining that you need gcses:a levels for posts where previously these weren't needed, means that people already in can't move up the ladder.

I'm surprised theres nothing though, should be plenty of call centre, data entry, paper pusher type starter jobs.

Do you live somewhere a bit more remote? Most departments are moving to regional centres in large cities so unlikely to find so many local offices in small towns anymore.

Just looked on Civil Service jobs - there are 724 AA - EO vacancies for external candidates.

There are loads? Where are you looking and what do you consider entry level?

NewYearNewCareer · 08/01/2023 19:41

I have just done this. I worked in schools over 10 years and have landed an insurance position - don’t stick to civil service so many companies are recruiting and theses loads looking for people with good people skills, flexibility etc

What qualifications do you have?

RewildingAmbridge · 08/01/2023 19:42

Also look at justice jobs, separately as MOJ/HMPPS jobs are often there more than the standard civil service site. It's still civil service.

Thank you for your advice! I’ve managed to find some now.

I really didn’t phrase my post properly, my fault.

I have a humanities degree and been a teacher for 10 years, so by entry level, I meant for someone with my experience. (I’m not expecting a teachers’ salary! I’m fully aware I won’t be able to match it on entry)

I hear of people in education going into the civil service- are these teachers simply going into admin roles or going into types of jobs that I’m not aware of?

I’m relatively new to searching, perhaps I’ll just keep researching and keep my eyes peeled for a little longer!

The civil service is going through a bit of a shake up, with big emphasis being put on professions. Be that policy, operational delivery, comms... there are 21 I believe.

NewYearNewCareer · 08/01/2023 21:38

The civil service won’t pay as much as some private companies.

A lot now are advertising on skill sets, which you will have being a teacher - organised, flexible, personable, helpful, look further afield and don’t limit your salary.

Search on the Civil Service Jobs site and also the Cabinet Office jobs site.
Lots of vacancies at the moment - good luck!

ZebraKid71 · 10/02/2023 20:25

I manage a team of HEOs and two of them were previously teachers who joined the civil service at that grade so you definitely don't need to be looking at AO roles with 10 years experience as a teacher. Have a think about what you're interested in and go from there - there are always hundreds of EO roles available and quite a lot of HEO at the moment too so it's a bit of a minefield just to be looking at everything. Good luck!

When people say civil service, what is the civil service? Government or council jobs?

Civil Service tends to mean central government departments (ministries) or executive agencies whereas local/county councils would be referred to as local government.
