to those that work part time, what do your fulltime colleges make of it when you finish?

nothing whatsoever, as far as I know. Half of the staff in my office are part timers.

It's not like I'm getting paid as much as them but shirking the workload. My work is nearly always complete when I leave the office, it isn't down to my colleagues to pick up the slack.

fullmoonfiend · 04/02/2008 17:16

do you mean colleagues?

I had a huge problem with my old job - i was the only female and all the blokes were single/childless so every single day without fail, someone would make a ''humorous '' comment like : ''that's ruight, you fuck off early...''
despite the fact that I often came in early to compensate and worked right up until the last possible moment before the nursery shut and then had to go home and do housework/shopping etc and never came in too hungover to work - unlike them

I now work with an organisation where themajority of people work part-time....bliss.

Makes no odds to them, usually. I do a different job, and they just pile my desk up if necessary.

Apart from management, they all work shifts anyway, so we're all in at different times.

Not too many comments, but a few from the jokey man in the office - "what, off again, you hardly got here" etc etc! Like fullmoonfiend, I think I work just as hard, never have a lunch break, rush in straight from school drop-off, rush back straight to school pick-up, then have to cope with housework, cooking, shopping etc etc on top. It's no picnic!

I have always worked parttime in this role. Finish work at 3 pm every weekday. No comments whatsoever - my role is very family friendly. In fact, colleagues don't expect me to be in the office after 3 pm. So on the few occasions I have stayed later (eg because I am joining dh at an evening function), people get a bit disorientated and think it is still before 3 pm!

In my previous role, I would invariably get parttime comments if I left at 7 pm. People routinely worked overnight.

branflake81 · 06/02/2008 07:44

I get sarky comments for leaving at 5:30 and I'm not part time! People where I work do stupidly long hours purely (I think) because they want to look good in front of the managers. I'm always the first to leave but sod it - I don't get paid any more if I do stay and quite frankly I don't want to!

I work full time but have a great boss who has agreed that I can leave at 4pm every day. Nobody has ever said anything to me (not to my face anyway) - I've been doing it for 18 months now and everybody just accepts it as the norm. I think it helps that I have worked for the organisation for almost 20 years and have proved my worth already!!

I work part time and i'm the only one where i work that does, i only get comments from the men, like 'going home to sit on your ass are you' and they call me 'part timmer' but i always take it as a joke.

FrayedKnot · 06/02/2008 15:32

LOl at colleagues getting disorientated!

I work 8.30-12.30 but on odd occasions have to swap to work an afternoon, and have had people looking at their watches in disbelief and joking about how it can;t still be morning.

I also work with several others who are p/t and even my boss comes in later because he drops his son at school first.

It's a very flexible, family-friendly organization on the whole.

FrayedKnot · 06/02/2008 15:33

I do often get comments about leaving early (in the joking sense, not serious), but I always remind people that I'm off to do my unpaid work now whereas they still have another 3 hours of pay to earn.
