Nursing to accounting

Hey, so story goes, I am a registered nurse and have been for around a decade. The health service has obviously taken a turn for the worse and I'm just gutted I can't do my job to the standard I wish I could. I'm thinking of a complete career change.

I'm thinking of changing to accounting. I would have to go back to college/uni which would be fine financially. Thinking this career would be more future-proof and I could earn a decent salary. By the time I qualified, my kids would be older so time wouldn't be so much of an issue.

Any pros/cons or experience anyone can share with me?

Thank you in advance

You don't go to college/university to move into accountancy, you find a training contract with an employer. They then pay for your college courses on day release as you work through the professional qualification.

ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA are the bodies for chartered route. Or AAT, ATT for technician. If you read their websites you can learn about the different routes to qualification and which suits you.

Don't waste money on an accounting degree. Even if you had one you would still have to do a 3 year training contract with an employer and take all the professional exams.

It's effectively an apprenticeship type route to qualify as an accountant, although that term has only recently started to be used to describe training contracts. Look for apprentice or trainee roles with study support.
