Minimum Hours/Pay

Is there a minimum amount your employer has to pay you for if they ask you to come into work? I'm on annual leave for two weeks and my employer wants me to attend a 45 minute zoom about the 2023 vision. I can log my time but I get paid so little that 45 minutes or even an hour really isn't worth it to me. I thought maybe my employer had to pay for at least 2 hours work but I can't find anything online.

No there's not. That's why 0 hour contracts exist.

JustBkind · 19/12/2022 08:19

My understanding in public sector is if you we’re called upon to do this while taking annual leave, it would be minimum 2 hours plus your time (it would be classed as a “call out”). I’m not sure in private sector though.

Im not on a zero hours contract. I'm contracted to 16 hours a week. I can log extra hours for pay but like, I don't want to....

Can't you just ask them to record it and watch it when you get back?

mumof3now2 · 19/12/2022 08:38

Why don't you just ask if you can start 45 mins later or finish 45 mins earlier one day?

isthisit83 · 19/12/2022 08:39

Yea I was thinking about the recording. I don't think I can do the leave early one day. I'll just log the time if I have to do it. Or maybe login, put on mute with no video and walk away.

Gosh, is it? Because I've never heard any such thing and my employer definitely doesn't do this. If we are called upon to do something during annual leave the answer is "no I am on leave".

Whatthediddlyfeck · 19/12/2022 08:42

It absolutely depends on your t+c. In my job this would be “recall to duty” and there’s a massive enhancement for it.

isthisit83 · 19/12/2022 08:47

Hmm, maybe I'll try to dig out my contract... I doubt it says anything. They've called me into meetings previously and it's always really annoyed me. But never during annual leave.

Just say you are on leave and will watch the recording when you are back! Its only 45 mins so the time is neither here nor there, but you are off for two weeks.

isthisit83 · 19/12/2022 08:54

I've asked my manager if there's a reason it can't be watched as a recording in the new year. Might message HR? Not sure what they would say.

What would they do if you were spending your annual leave on a tropical island in the middle of nowhere with no wifi? They'd have to figure something out. As far as they're concerned, you're on leave therefore unavailable. If it was so important that everyone should see it, they would find a way - either record it, or run multiple sessions.

isthisit83 · 19/12/2022 09:13

@BoxOfCats i agree. I've asked why it can't be recorded and just said I can't make it.

You're on leave which has presumably been agreed and signed off in advance. This doesn't seem like a good reason to recall you to work especially when zoom/ teams/ online sessions can be recorded and watched later. It's not an emergency, they are not understaffed etc. so they shouldn't really be asking you to come back for this.

I would just say sorry but I'm away on that day and won't be available to work, if you'd like me to watch the meeting when I'm back please record it.
