First job interview in 26 years !

I have worked for the same company for 26 years which I'm actually quite embarrassed about . I have stayed for the convenience and the wage isn't bad for the hours I do. However I have become increasingly bored and fed up . Last week on a whim I looked through a well known job site saw a job I thought I could do , googled the company and decided to apply . I rung them direct , I have now spoken to both directors and they want to meet me next week ! I know it's highly unlikely I will get it but think it's a big confidence booster getting an interview . I don't want to tell many people irl as that will just be more people I have to tell that I haven't got it . Just posting for good vibes please!

Why are you embarrassed? It shows that you’re committed which is good quality to have. It will definitely put you at an advantage because loyalty is somewhat important. If you haven’t got all the skills to do the job, just say that you’re a quick learner and you are adaptable.

I just feel that I should have made an effort over the years to progress but I have it easy where I work and I got complacent that combined with bringing up 3 kids on my own for 7 years made it an easy option. I definitely have the skills for the job .

Nothing at all to be embarrassed about Op - good luck with the interview. I'm sure you'll do brilliantly!

Thank you ! I don't feel nervous ( yet !) just excited

Go for it, treat it as interview practice and CV practice 👍👍

Good luck 👍

girlmom21 · 17/12/2022 17:55

Good luck OP! It sounds like they like you already.

summergone · 17/12/2022 22:48

@EngTech that's exactly what I'm thinking , it's good practice .

@girlmom21 thank you . I'm a naturally chatty person so didn't have any problem chatting to them on the phone 😀

Well the interview went well I think , I was there 50 minutes but I have no idea if that's the norm or not 🤔 I really want it , but they have had lots of applicants so trying not to get my hopes up ! Find out at 8pm tonight 🤞🤞

Good luck OP.

The way I see it is that if everybody was constantly striving for promotion and changing jobs every 2 minutes to "get on", then there would be no one left to do the actual work.

There's nothing wrong with being one of the "runners and riders". I am one too. My organisation would be on its knees if it wasn't for employees like us as everyone else is constantly job hopping and therefore they build up very little in depth knowledge or on the job experience.

So you might be more coveted than you think you are!

Frazzled2207 · 23/12/2022 10:25

Well done you. Even if you don’t get it this is a great step forward to doing something else

not quite as long as you but I also stayed in a job/company far longer than I should have done- when you are juggling young children stability counts for a lot and I can totally see why you stayed a long time. Onwards and upwards now tho!

summergone · 23/12/2022 10:32

@THisbackwithavengeance and @Frazzled2207 yea that makes perfect sense what you are saying , not every one can be on the move all the time ! There was such a nice atmosphere there and a nice buzz not like where I am now . It is easy to get stuck in a rut when you have young kids and I was on my own for years and their father was beyond useless so a job miles away where I needed help with drop offs would have been quite hard

Good luck OP! The process of applying and interviewing is a massive step regardless of the outcome, but it sounds like you did great.

summergone · 23/12/2022 10:42

@washingmachineheart thank you , I didn't have a cv so I just thought sod it I will bypass Indeed and call them direct 😀

Good luck!

I don't think being in the same job for all that time is a bad thing at all

I recently had my first job interview in 15 years, I hadn't worked for 11. Was really nerve wrecking
