Does the hiring manager make the final decision ?

I am a head of recruitment and I don't decide on who gets hired unless the report to me. The hiring manager is the one with the vacancy, the person will report to them so they make the decision. It's been the same in every place I have worked.

Basically I'm being nosey here (sorry) my friend had lost her job a while ago but sent me a text this morning that the hiring manager had emailed her as he wanted to have a chat as she has lots of experience in what they are looking for. There are quite a few jobs advertised so he's phoning her for a chat. I don't know if that helps

Yep absolutely @dingdongmerrilyyourflyin that's how it works work in my organisation currently. Usually there has to be some sort of sign off on the vacancy which might involve HR or finance etc but assuming that's in place then I would hope the H/M is empowered enough to make the decision.

I took out the 'HR' interview stage in my last company as it added zero value, and just extended the process for candidates.

That's how it works in my organisation. Depending on the volume of applications, various people might be deputised to sift and score applications and conduct interviews but it will be the hiring manager who closely reviews the final shortlist and chooses the successful candidate(s).

In my experience the HM usually has the final say from an agreed pool, but others (HR and the HM’s manager for instance) might have a veto before you get to that stage. So even if the HM wants them it won’t be a done deal.

With us, the hiring manager says, "I'd like to interview these," from list of CVs passed on by HR. After interviewing, they say yes/no on each candidate. HR does reference and other checks, and assuming nothing dodgy comes up there, person HM wants will be offered job. But HR could say, X problem came up checking qualifications/right to work/references, so job offer can't proceed. I guess this sort of policy could affect your friend, but it will depend on the company.

Varies but all organisations I’ve worked at used hiring managers as basically in house recruiters. They didn’t get final say. Or any say beyond putting them forward for the job.
