Currently a teaching assistant so we don't get paid for the whole year.
Looking for a new role that doesn't involve any physical violence etc .lucky enough to have an interview for one next week but the pay will only be about £150 more per month before extra costs such as increased travel taken off buy I will be working 7 weeks more per year.
Currently been a ta for 18months and love the Monday to Friday role as I had previously been a care worker on shift.
The roles I am looking at are low level administrative roles which seem to pay around 23500 in sussex and Surrey.
Would you work more hours for only 150 per month more

I suppose for me personally it would depend on a couple factors of things:

  1. Will the working conditions be better / is the environment a better fit for you?
  2. Do you currently rely on the long holidays got childcare purposes? Because if you suddenly find yourself using annual leave / paid childcare to plug the gap, £150 a month won’t get you very far.

I definitely wouldn't take the new role unless you really dislike your current job and think you would be much happier. I would take on temp work/bank/admin/anything you fancy trying roles in the weeks/ times you're off. You would then get some experience and could find out one of these temp jobs could turn into something more permanent knowing you already like it. But for £150 per month going from term time work to full time no I wouldn't.

Is the new job full time hours (ie 52 weeks a year, 37 hours a week)? That doesn't sound like much of a difference money wise if so, though saying that, you must be a very well paid TA if your current salary isn't far off £23,000 pa! I was on £11k pa as a TA and my first job after moving out of education towards admin was 4 days a week, 52 weeks a year and I was on around £14k pa. I quickly decided to move up to full time in a more interesting role and am now on £22k pa and looking for promotion to the next grade.

It is the best thing I have done. I am so much happier, I am making a much larger contribution to my pension and the promotion prospects are endless, unlike in school where I could go no further once I was promoted to cover supervisor (without taking the giant, stressful leap to teacher, which I was not prepared to do!)

Go for it, look upon it as the first step to a whole new career.

@ChicaneOvenchips we are paid well as a very challenging school .my pay is 20500 for 44.9 wks of the Yr. I don't need school hours . I agree it will be a lot easier to get promotion once doing this role ..I agree it will open up new things.
